Imperial City Raffle Draw: This opportunity is too good to miss

Mere looking at 32 year old Saheed Lawal, he cuts the picture of a pitiable, low-income artisan, and that was just what he would be described until a few days ago when his levels changed and he climbed the rungs of the ladder to join the club of millionaires in Nigeria.

The change in class, levels and fortune has also become the enviable lot of Aina Williams, a stand-in for a shop owner in Ile Oluji, Ondo State. On the 18th day of November, Saheed Lawal won the N42m-worth star prize land in an ongoing Imperial City Promo, powered by the Elegushi of Ikateland.

Clad in a faded, threadbare, blue shirt and an equally frayed striped black pair of trousers, on Tuesday this week at his bed-sitter located at Egbe Alagun Quarters, Oke Sopin, a remote area of Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, Lawal could not hide his emotions as he narrated how he almost missed buying the ticket. Lawal told our correspondent how he had gone to the Lotto kiosk manned by his younger brother, Ahmed, to play another game. But as he was familiar with the machine, he decided to operate it himself same way he’s used to.

As luck would have it, he pressed a button different from the one he was supposed to. Apparently contemplating about his new status, Lawal sitting on the neatly made king-sized bed which occupied a larger space in the room, which also contained a cupboard on which lay some scuffed pairs of shoes, starred at Funmilayo, his wife. Funmilayo sat on a sofa placed before the un-plastered wall where cement blocks starred angrily at onlookers in protest of the scrawls painted on them in while chalk by children practising their writing skills.

Dangling over her head was a medium-sized photo frame where the couple was smiling at each other. Saheed a onetime house painter-turned-millionaire heaved a deep sigh and narrated his ordeal and success story,

“I was not buoyant that fateful day. I only had N500 on me and I was feeling low. I decided to go to my brother’s shop to catch some fun. At the shop, I decided to use N200 out of the N500 with me to play a game. As I am familiar with the machine, I decided to operate it as I usually do.

It was a mistake. I pressed the wrong button. To make matters worse, the fee for the game was N500 as against the one of N200 I intended playing. I was angry with myself. I wanted to stop playing the game but I could not anymore as I had pressed the button, so most reluctantly I continued.

After the ticket came out, out of annoyance, I just kept it in a bag in the kiosk and went home angrily. “I was very angry with myself as my plan was to spend only N200 on the game, give N200 to my wife for dinner and keep the remaining N100.”

The father of two continued in the Yoruba language heavily laced with the Ijebu accent, “Getting home, I regretfully told my wife what happened. Of course, she was livid with anger berating me for spending the money for the family upkeep on gambling.”

Funmilayo, his wife and a mother of two, who met Lawal at the Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic where they were both schooled ago, said she always knew her husband would make it in life as he was hardworking and a focused goal-getter. Asked if she knew riches would come by playing Lotto, she replied in the negative.

“I never liked gambling or game playing as they call it but I just allow my husband to do it since he likes it. But despite the fact that I knew he would be something, I never thought it would come through this way. We missed our supper the day he played the game.

“It is a way God has designed to put away my shame. I have suffered. I have really suffered. But now, I thank God that it has ended in praise”, Funmilayo, a teacher at a privately-owned primary school, said in polished Queens English. But, how did Lawal end up being a house painter having successfully pursued a diploma in accounting?

“I attended Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo after which I proceeded to the Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic where I did a diploma course in Accounting. Due to the prevailing economic situation in the country, I felt someone should have a trade hence I learnt house painting for one and a half years. I was actually on a job in Ibadan, Oyo State when I heard the call from my wife to produce the ticket of the game I played with Golden Chance the previous week and I had to rush back to Ijebu Igbo because of it.

“I never had any hope of winning. I didn’t even know what the star prize was. I just played it.” Married in 2009 Lawal and his wife live with his aunt, Mrs. Kuburat Ososanya and are next-door neighbours to his parents, Mr. Adekunle Lawal, a civil servant ad mother, Adenike, a teacher at a government owned primary school.

Lawal, the first of his parents’ five children, as a house painter earns about N15, 000 for a week’s job which according to him comes once in a while. He said, “As a painter, I earn about N15, 000 for a week’s job but business has been quite dull for a while. The peak period of house painting is usually at the end of the year when people mostly move to their new houses or renovate their current ones.

“Actually, I was in Ibadan for a job when I received a call that I should produce the ticket of the game I played the previous week. My partner had insisted on paying me N1, 200 a day instead of the N3,000 we usually collect for an out-of-town job. This was even after the intervention of the owner of the house because he had initially insisted that there was no job for me.”

His aunt, Kuburat Ososanwo, described Lawal as a kind and understanding fellow, who came to live with her despite the condition of her house after she had appealed to his parents to allow him come as she needed someone as neighbour in her apartment. “He is my nephew and a good neighbour. I pray for him every time because I know he has good leadership qualities,” she said. As our reporter departed from his modest apartment, Lawal increased the volume of his beat-up stereo which blared a tune, “Ore ti o common”, meaning “uncommon fortune.”

To the Lawals and neighbours who had shed tears of joy with him during his chat with our media team, winning a N42m plot of land through a N500 lotto ticket was really an uncommon favour. The train of uncommon fortune also landed in Ile Oluji, in Ondo State.

Recently a lady proceeded on vacation. In order not to lose her customers, she asked someone to hold the fort for her. Little did she know that this would pave way for the proxy to become a millionaire. Just as he settled down to business, the proxy partook in the promo and won a cash prize of N1 million.

FRSC To Hike Fees For Driver’s Licence, Number Plate

The FRSC says the current rate of N6,000 and N12,000 for driver’s licence and vehicle plate number is no longer sustainable

– The Corps Marshall of the agency, Boboye Oyeyemi discloses that debt was crippling the operations of the FRSC nationwide

– Oyeyemi says many states have failed to supply generators to the FRSC offices where vehicle plate number and drivers licence are procured

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said it is considering raising the cost of procuring the driver’s licence and vehicle plate number due to the cost of producing the two items.

The corps marshall of the agency, Boboye Oyeyemi, who disclosed this on Monday, November 28, said the current rate of N6,000 and N12,000 for both items respectively was no longer sustainable judging from the hike in operational cost owing to the recession.

Oyeyemi, made this disclosure at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board (JTB) held in Abuja, where he said debt was crippling the operations of the FRSC nationwide, Daily Post reports.

He said the running cost for the agency keeps swelling as many states have failed to supply generators to the FRSC offices where vehicle plate number plates and drivers licence are procured.

He however commanded some states like Anambra and Delta for offsetting their debt, even as he urged others to emulate them.

He said: “N6,000 to get a driver’s licence and N12,000 for vehicle plate number is too poor. We are spending so much to produce them. I’m running over 200 in stations across the country. I shouldn’t be providing that. The states should.

“When I came in last year, the popular Mikano generator was N1.5 million, now it’s N3.8 million. Only Kwara State provided a generator. Majority of the states defaulted in providing that. All states should have secured offices. They should own these stations and I want to relocate workstations there. I want to stamp out corruption. Enough is enough.

“So, for us, our running costs is too high and the states should help us. We can be collecting N1,000 on every plate number and N500 on every licence as commission. That will help us a great deal.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday, November 23 approved the purchase of vehicles worth N464 million for the FRSC.

The vehicles include 50 pick-up vans to be purchased from Innoson Motors, Nnewi, and 27 Peugeot 301 cars to be bought from Peugeot Automobile Nigeria, Kaduna.

According to the minister of labour and productivity, Dr Chris Ngige the decision to patronise indigenous companies was in line with the government’s local content policy.

Senate Approves Over N214bn For Buhari Over N180bn Virement Funds

Contrary to opinions in some quarters that the Senate would not approve the N180bn request by President Muhammadu Buhari for the virement of funds appropriated in the 2016 Appropriation Act; the upper legislative chamber on Tuesday dazzled Nigerians by not only approving the said amount; but also increased the virement to the tune of N213,821,671,494.

The Senate also approved additional request of N300m appropriated in the 2016 Budget under the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for the construction of 132 KVA substation at Gwaram, Jigawa state.

President Muhammadu Buhari had about a month ago written to the National Assembly, requesting that a total of N180bn be approved as virement of funds appropriated in the 2016 Appropriation Act; to attend to some critical capital and recurrent expenditures.
The Senate considered the request and referred it to its committee on Appropriations for further legislative action on Wednesday 16th November 2016.

Presenting the report on Tuesday, the Chairman, Committee on Appropriations, Senator Danjuma Goje (Gombe Central) said, “the committee met with its House counterpart and deliberated on the course of action in order to abridge time. And also jointly had an interactive meeting with the affected MDAs on the virement, that is, the source of the funds and the expenditure MDAs in the Budget to clarify the need for the virement.”

To justify the rationale behind approving far above the requested sum, Senator Goje said, “the affected MDAs justified the need for intervention in their respective Agencies and some also made the point that the amount proposed in the request was inadequate to meet the observed shortfall required to carry out their mandate and financial obligations”.

“In the course of the interaction with the MDAs, the committee observed that there are other areas of critical need that are capable of stimulating the economy which additional funds can still be provided with monies vired from the Special Intervention Programme,” he added.

A critical analysis of the report of the Committee shows that the Senate approved the sum of N167,113,304,018 for recurrent expenditures as against the N165,430,886,954 requested for in Buhari’s letter.

The committee also approved the sum of N2,500,000,000 as Statutory Transfer in the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) salary shortfall, instead of N1,200,000,000 requested by the President.

Another look at the report shows that President Buhari requested for the sum of N14,208,367,476 as capital expenditure for Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE); whereas, the Senate approved the sum of N39,208,367,476.

Though there were divergent of opinions, especially from the opposition members of the Senate on the propriety or otherwise of the recommendations of the committee, majority of the Senators present gave a voice votes in support, thereby adopting the report of the Committee and approved a total sum of N213,821,671,494, in addition to N300m as virement of funds for President Buhari.

“Inside the car I met two already seated at the back, then one at the front seats with the driver making 4, we became 5 plus me but after a few second of driving a guy from the back alighted, leaving two of us at the back sit, then the guy with me at the back sit told the driver to pack that he wants to drop too and the driver asked, “bro!  “After raping me turn by turn, they will take my naked pic, give me other concoction to swallow, dispose me off my valuables, drive me at night to an ATM, where I will withdraw all my money for them, and if I am from a rich family they will set me free but they’ll be calling me to bring them huge amount of money or threaten to release the pics to social media , and if i am not from a rich family, that’s how they’ll sell to the ritualistic , or do the cutting themselves. “I was in shock, crying and weeping profusely as I thank my father In Heaven for not making my years of suffer go down just like that.

If you’re within Akure please be careful, they are roaming the streets freely, I wonder what the force men are doing about this, if you go out and see 20taxis, I assure you 6 to 7 of them are set of this guyz! “Fellow corpers be careful, everyone at Akure open your eyes and don’t let love of money make you fall victim, I heard lots of people are missing , some are found with their hair scraped , while some are dead with many parts missing. “Shine your eyes well, am yet to recover from the shock, glory to God, to my guardian Angel and to my mother who pray ceaselessly day and night for me. We shall not mourn ourselves in the remaining of the year and the years a ahead.” Nawa oh!Dumbira Efe Bukola

Naira crashes to N480 as more BDC operators go into hiding

The Naira has depreciated further to N480 per dollar at the parallel market.

The currency weakened from N473 to N475, then further down to N480/$1 at the black market  on Tuesday afternoon.

Dollar to Naira The local currency trades at N585 to a Pound and N500 for the Euro.

Naira crashes to N470 against dollar at parallel market   According to Omotola Abimbola, an analyst at Afrinvest the black market will go further underground. Abimbola attributed the fall of the Naira to the current raid of Bureau De Change operators in Lagos and Abuja by operatives of the Department of State Securities (DSS).

He said: “The fact they went as low as getting security forces on the streets shows a new level of desperation. “That’s creating a parallel market within the black market.”

A top BDC operator also said on the condition of anonymity: “They now come regularly to locations where these people usually operator from. About five of them (DSS operatives) recently visited this area but they didn’t come into the offices of licensed BDCs.

They are targeting the unlicensed and illegal operators. But everybody is careful now. You only deal with people you know except where they have their documentation. The only problem is that it is difficult to get the exchange rate that reflects the true position of the market.

People quote different rates depending on the person they are dealing with and the source of the dollar. That is how we now operate.” The fall of the local currency can also be attributed to the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to slash dollar sales to BDCs by 46%.

Vanguard reports that last week, the CBN sold $8,000 to each BDC through Travelex Nigeria Limited.  This represents 46% decline when compared to $15,000 usually sold per week to each BDC. Meanwhile, the CBN recently justified the raid on illegal currency traffickers.

According to the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, the nation’s foreign exchange laws forbid street trading of foreign currency.

Policeman Shoots Kwara Poly Student, Family Kicks

The family of Alhaji Atiku Olugbon of Ote, in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, to investigate the shooting of their son, Bukola Olugbon, by a policeman, Abubakar Ahmed.

A relative of the victim, Mr. Ibrahim Olugbon, said, “The police must investigate and punish the culprit to serve as a deterrent to others.” It was gathered that Bukola, who had been admitted to Adedayo Clinic and Maternity on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Ilorin, was shot on the premises of a bank.

He told our correspondent that he had gone with his father, Atiku, to a branch of First Bank Plc in Surulere, Ilorin.

He stated that his father wanted to withdraw money for his school fees and had joined the queue in the banking hall.

He said he was also waiting for his father in the banking hall when a security man attached to the bank challenged him.

Bukola, a second year Civil Engineering Higher National Diploma student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, said he explained to the security man that he was waiting for his father who was in the queue.

He said the security man told him to leave the banking hall, but he explained again that he was waiting for his father who wanted to give him money.

He added that the security man subsequently invited another man, who later turned out to be Ahmed.

Bukola said, “The policeman did not show me any identity and was not in uniform. He asked me what happened between the security man and me and I explained to him. As I made to leave him, the policeman dragged me back and slapped me. He drew me out from the banking hall and shot at my leg. I don’t know when and how I got to the police station at the B Division Surulere. “They asked me at the police station who shot me and I told them that Ahmed shot me. I was bleeding profusely. I don’t know how I got to the hospital. “I am feeling pains. This can affect my education and my future. I need N6m compensation from the police. He said

21 Tips To Make Distinction In All Your Courses As A Nigerian Undergraduate

I decided to write this post for the purpose of granting the request of one of the readers of this blog, an undergraduate of university of Benin. He wanted a guide on how to make distinction in all his courses. As much as he’s going to benefit from this article, I also believe you will benefit immensely if you are currently undergoing an academic program in any institution of higher learning. The ideas and academic success principles I am about to share with you are what I have personally applied and have seen worked for other high-flying students I met in the course of my academic journey from primary school to the university level.

What to do to make distinction in your courses include the following:

1. Desire to Make Distinction in All Your Courses Badly: Every achievement in life begins with a DESIRE. If you must make distinction in all your courses, you must have a BURNING desire to achieve that feat. With a burning desire, you will be able to go through every pain and stress necessary to birth your distinctions. When you are faced with obstacles, a burning desire for academic success will propel you to focus on solutions rather than problems. It will keep you going.

2. Write down your goal: Your goal here is to make distinction in all your courses. It is not enough to just have it on your head that you want to make distinction in all your courses, it is important you write it down in your personal journal. Writing down your goals makes them appear tangible and achievable. It is essential that you paste it where you can see it every day. You can paste it beside your mirror or somewhere in your room.

The first thing I always do once I resume for a new term when I was in secondary is to make a list of all my subjects and write the grades I want to have in all. I did same too when I was an undergraduate. The result is that my mates marvel at my academic performance. Some folks in my secondary school days, especially when I was in J.S.S 1 taught I was not ordinary, because they could not imagine how I achieved the feat of making A’s in virtually all my subjects. The reason lies in the fact that I decided to make A’s in all my subjects and I know that if it must be, I must have certain amount of mark in each subject to attain the goal, so I put in the needed effort to achieve my goal. I went on to be among the top 10 graduating students in secondary school out of over 200 hundred students, and graduated with a second class upper from the university. Without academic goals, you can hardly be an outstanding student.

3. Get the course outline of all the courses for the semester: what will be your class of degree, whether a first class, second class upper, second class lower, third class or ordinary pass at the end of your degree program is a combination of your performances in all the semesters that constitute your degree program. Your ultimate success will be determined by the success of each semester. If you can endeavor to do well one semester at a time, you will come out with a satisfactory class of degree, at least a minimum of second class upper.

To have a successful semester, the first thing to do is to get the course outline for all your courses. Everything you are expected to know for the semester is in the course outline, and its content is where your test and examination questions will be drawn from. It is an essential tool that you must have.

4. Get the materials for all your courses: In higher institutions in Nigeria, lecturers usually prepare handout for the course they are taking, and each student is expected to get a copy of the handout, so that they can have access to the components of the course. If you want to make distinction, it essential you get all the materials for your courses. Buy all the recommended handouts and text books for the semester. If you can’t afford them, borrow from those who bought and make photocopy, it is cheaper.

5. Attend lectures regularly: if you want to make distinction in all your courses, it is imperative that you attend lectures. When you are in class, listen to the lecturer. Compare his teachings to the content of the course material. There are some lecturers that teach so many things that you won’t find in the course material, while some teach word for word of what is in the course material. Now, for the lecturers whom you cannot predict what they teach based on their course material, it is essential that you attend their class, in fact don’t miss their class, if making distinction is your goal.

Some brilliant students don’t believe in attending lectures because they believe they can always read, and assimilate the content of the course materials and pass exam. What do you think would happen if most questions are set out of the content of the course material or if the lecturer expects students to answer certain questions based on the explanation he gave in class? Such students no matter how brilliant they are won’t make a distinction in that course. I once failed a course that way. I got to the examination hall only to see questions whose answers can never be found in the course material.

If you must boycott any lecturer’s class, let it be the class of a lecturer whose teaching can be predicted based on the course material. Without attending his class, you will pass if you study the course material properly.

Another reason why it is essential to attend lectures is because of continuous assessment. Continuous assessment is the combination of your class attendance, your contribution in class, assignments and test coupled with the final examination score. Not attending classes will make you lose some mark which may cost you a distinction in that course.

6. Read, Read and Read: If you don’t like reading, you may not be able make distinction in all your courses. You must be ready to read. Try to know the studying method that work best for you and the best time of the day that you can assimilate things faster. To some, their prime time is early in the morning, some prefer afternoon while some get the best out of studies when they study at night. It is your responsibility to know the reading method, and time of the day that works best for you.

If you must make distinction in all your courses, it is imperative that you cover all the components or content of your course outline. It is essential that you read your course material(s) from cover to cover, and digest them properly.

7. Get Past question papers: Research shows that about 50% of questions set for candidates during examination can be found in past question papers of that particular course or subject. Past question paper is a powerful tool you will need to excel in any course. Make effort to get the past question papers of all your courses as early as possible, and learn to use them as the semester progresses. Study the way the lecturer structures his questions, and apply it as you study his course material. Frame questions based on his pattern of setting question for all the contents of the course material, and learn to answer them in the best way possible.

8. Do your assignment and submit promptly: Assignment, whether individual or group is one of the components of continuous assessment. Failure to do and submit your assignment may cost you a distinction, no matter how brilliant you are. For this reason, cooperate with your lecturer by doing your assignment as soon as possible and submit when expected.

9. Always prepare for impromptu test: There are days you will go for lectures as usual, only for the lecturer to tell you to get a sheet of paper, write your name and matriculation number, and your course code. The next thing you will see is questions on the board. If you didn’t anticipate such test, you will be thrown off balance. And if you fail such test due to lack of preparation, that may cost you a distinction. To avoid such failure, I suggest that as soon as you are getting to the middle of the semester, you should always expect test any time you are going for lectures and always prepare in advance.

10. Find out the marking style of the lecturers: if you want to make a distinction in a course, it is important you know the way the lecturer expects students to answer his questions. Some lecturers want you to give them verbatim what they taught you or what are in their course material, while others want you to come up with something out of the box but still in line with what you were taught. Having this knowledge and answering his questions based on his expectation will earn you your distinction without stress. You can get this information from senior colleagues who have passed through the lecturer.

11. Prepare adequately for examination: At the end of every semester, you are going to write exam in all the courses for that semester. If you have followed the previous instructions, you will definitely be prepared for the final exam. You must make adequate preparation for the exam. Adequate preparation include, covering the course outline, reading all the recommended course materials, reading the note taken in class during lectures and practicing past questions.

12. Don’t miss the revision class prior to exam: Examination is never a battle between the lecturers and students. It is the joy of every good teacher to see that his students excel at the end of the semester.
During final revision that precedes examination, the teacher most often do their best to give students hints on possible areas that questions are likely to come out from. Prior to this time, they have set their questions, and submitted them to the faculty management.

By being attentive to what the lecturer says in the revision class, you will have a glimpse of possible questions to be expected and areas you need to focus on in the course material or lecturer’s note. Missing such class can cost you a distinction.

13. Choose your friends wisely: it is important to note that the people with whom you associate as a student play a very big role in your academics. You must make effort to relate with students who are serious minded; students who have burning desire for unlimited academic success. These set of students would challenge and motivate you to be up and doing. Associating will them with keep you alert and help you to focus on your academic goals. Always remember that “he that walks with the wise shall be wise, but the companion of fools shall be destroyed.” It is better to be a loner as a student than to be in the company of unserious folks. 5 Things to Do On the Examination Day

The examination day is the day to reap every effort you have been making right from day one of the semester, so if you make any mistake that day, you may end up losing your reward. I suggest that you do the following five things on the examination day.

14. Be early to the exam venue: It is essential you get to the exam hall or venue at least fifteen minutes before the exam commences. This will give you the opportunity to relax and get your mind ready for the exam.

15. Go with all the needed examination kit: This may include your pen, mathematical set, your Id card, and everything you will be in need of in the examination hall. Don’t go to the exam hall with the plan of borrowing anything you will need. Doing so will slow you down, and can even cost you your distinction.

16. Write your name and matriculation number where they are needed: There have been cases where students submit answer booklet and forget to write their name and matriculation number. To avoid this mistake, write your name, matriculation number, and course code as soon as you get your answer booklet.

17. Read the instructions thoroughly and comprehend them before you solve the questions: Take note of the instructions in your question paper and solve the questions in obedience to them. Most often, examiners use such words as list, state, enumerate, discuss, explain, and define and so on. You are expected to answer the questions based on the command or instruction given in the question paper. Disobedience to instruction due to error in understanding the instructions or answering the question in a way that is not consistent with the instructions simply to show the lecturer that you are brilliant can cause you fail.

18. Write legibly: If you have a bad handwriting, such that only you can read your work, you will fail no matter how brilliant you are. When writing examination, write in such a way, that even a blind man can read what you write. When you give the right answers using clear and legible hand writing, you can never be denied of distinction.

19. Work with time: Duration of time is always allotted to examination; it is your duty to make sure you answer as many as possible questions within the time given. If you know the answers but too slow to solve all the questions before the time elapses, you will lose your chances of making a distinction. What you need here is speed and accuracy.

20. Revise your answers before submitting: Don’t be in a rush to submit. Nobody is given a distinction for being the first to submit. Check your work properly; make corrections where necessary before you submit. And when submitting, make sure you submit in the right place because there are cases where students of different levels write exam simultaneously in the same hall. The school management often makes such arrangement in an attempt to curb examination malpractices. It will be a great mistake to have your script mixed up with a different group of students due to your own error. This kind of mistake is probably why some students do have missing script issue. Once again, make sure you submit where you should submit.

21. Keep praying till you see your result: You have done your best, now it is time to leave the rest to God. The kind of prayer you should pray is left to you. You must have it in mind that God will help you only when you have helped yourself by following the instructions in this article.

Vice Chancellor Of FUTA Arrested For Deliberately Crushing NASU Staff

Prof. Adebiyi Daramola, the embattled Vice Chancellor of the crisis-ridden Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), in Ondo State, was this morning arrested after he hit a member of staff of the institution with his car.

Abiodun Ademola Atunbi of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) member of FUTA was allegedly crushed to the point of death, and was rushed to the hospital.

SaharaReporters learned that the incident happened on the main campus at Oba’nla in Akure at about 8:30a.m. as some members of staff of the institution were gathering at a meeting point for prayers.
Our correspondent gathered that the victim is the younger brother of a renowned journalist, Dele Atunbi of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).

Police Officers from the Okuta Elerinla Police Station arrested Prof. Daramola shortly after the incident.

Several aggrieved members of staff of the school converged at the Senate building following the incident.

Many of them trooped out to the street and made a bonfire as a sign of protest against the Vice-Chancellor’s wickedness, described by one of them as a deliberate action taken out of anger to kill Mr. Atunbi, who was one of the activists agitating for his removal from office.

One source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Atunbi was on his way to the prayer ground but was attacked by Professor Daramola with his vehicle immediately the Vice Chancellor saw him.

“The Vice Chancellor deliberately did it with the aim of killing Mr. Atunbi who he sees as a threat and whistleblower to his corrupt administration in the school,” he said.

“This is a man that has been threatening to kill all of us who are agitating for his removal from the office following the discovery of his corrupt practices with the school treasury.”

Comrade Durojaiye, the FUTA Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) also confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters in a telephone interview.

“The incident happened around the bank road of the main campus, and I think it was deliberate because the Vice Chancellor has always threatened to deal with some of us who are against the continuity of his administration in the school.

“The victim, Mr. Atunbi, is a member of NASU and is our time-keeper during this period of protest and he rings the bells early in the morning to create awareness for members of staff to converge at our meeting point for prayers.

“Considering the incident that happened this morning, the aim of the VC is to kill us one after the other and keep us quiet but we have uncovered his plan, and he shall fail,” Mr. Durojaiye said.

Abuja Hospital Abandons Accident Victim For Hours Over Inability To Pay N3,500

An accident victim, James Omase, was reportedly refused medical attention for three hours on Saturday by the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja over his inability to pay a N3, 500 bill, reports Punchng.

Omase, 20, was taken to the hospital around 6pm but the medical personnel refused to attend to him until around 9pm, when his employer showed up and paid the bill. He was riding a motorcycle along Arab Road, Kubwa, when another rider rammed into him, causing him to fall and sustain injuries.

The victim, who worked as a security guard in a residential building, lost two teeth and also sustained an injury on his upper lips, had bruises on his head, right upper arm and on both hands.

Omase said, “I was on the ground in pains and people were passing by, nobody volunteered to take me to the hospital. It was a friend who saw me lying along the road, that took me to the hospital. But when I got there, the nurses said they won’t attend to me until I paid N3,500 for treatment. .

I told them I had N2,500 but they refused to accept it or attend to me. I was lying on a bench in pains for many hours. It was a neighbour, who learnt that I was involved in an accident, that went to inform my employers, who came to the hospital around 9pm and paid the money before I was treated.”

The acting Secretary, FCT Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Alice Odey-Achu, expressed disappointment over the conduct of the nurses, saying their action was unacceptable.

Obanikoro To Testify Against Fayose Over N4.7bn Fraud

A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, was at the Abuja office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday where he agreed to testify against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and his aide, Mr. Abiodun Agbele.

A reliable source said, “Senator Obanikoro came to the EFCC office on Monday morning as part of investigations into the N4.7bn. Since he has confessed that he was the one who collected the N4.7bn and distributed it, he is in the best position to testify in court.

“The EFCC wants him to testify against Agbele which will also build a strong case against Fayose who currently enjoys immunity. Obanikoro has agreed and will be listed as one of the EFCC witnesses.

“If Agbele is convicted, it automatically means that Fayose will also be convicted once he is charged in 2018. So let Fayose continue to play games. Omisore and Obanikoro are cooperating and returning money. Their troubles will end soon while Fayose’s own will keep getting worse.”

When contacted, Obanikoro’s lawyer, Mr. James Onoja (SAN), said he was not aware that his client was with the EFCC but promised to find out.

“I have been in court all day so I was not aware that he (Obanikoro) was with the EFCC. I will find out,” he said.

However, a source told our correspondent that the EFCC could still charge Obanikoro to court if he failed to cooperate with the EFCC.

He said, “Obanikoro has returned N104m and has pledged to return N480m in instalments every four months but if he cannot cooperate with the EFCC, then he and his sons may be charged along with the others.

“Plea bargain and negotiation are a standard practice in criminal justice across the world.”

Obanikoro had told the EFCC in his statement of oath that he received N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki in June 2014.

In his statement, the ex-minister told the EFCC that he handed N1.3bn to the then governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore; while N1.219bn was given to Fayose through his aide, Agbele, during the build-up to the Ekiti governorship election which Fayose won.

Obanikoro was said to have converted a remainder of the money into $5.377m and handed  it to Fayose at Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, in the presence of the then Ekiti State PDP Secretary, Tope Aluko, and other party stalwarts.

The ex-minister is believed to have kept about N785m for himself, an action which is said to have angered Fayose.

Agbele is currently standing trial before Justice Dimgba Igwe of a Federal High Court for allegedly receiving N1.219bn on behalf of Fayose.

At the last sitting, Mr. Alade Sunday, a manager and branch Head of Zenith Bank, narrated how the money was disbursed on the instructions of Agbele.

He had also said it took the cashiers about 10 days to count all the money.

Sunday had said Obanikoro flew the cash to Akure Airport and the money was loaded onto a bullion van.

He had said, “When we got to the airport, we waited for some minutes before the aircraft arrived. When the aircraft offloaded its passengers, one of them appeared to me to be Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and the other one appeared to be his ADC, Adewale.

“Agbele walked up to them and had a discussion with them. Thereafter, he signalled to me to bring the van. Bags loaded with cash were loaded into the van and Obanikoro’s ADC, Agbele and I drove back to the bank.

“When we got to the bank, we ‘bundle counted’ the cash and it was N724,500,000. Agbele told us that more money was still coming and then, Obanikoro’s ADC left for the airport immediately.

“In the evening, all of us left for the airport a second time. After the passengers disembarked, we offloaded the cash bags into our bullion van and drove back to the bank to ascertain how much the cash was. The second tranche was N494,990,000, bringing the total to about N1.219, 490,000.

“We headed straight to our zonal head office where instructions were given by Agbele on how the funds were to be credited to various accounts.”

Why PDP Lost Edo, Ondo And May Lose Future Elections - Ali Sheriff Faction

The Ali Sheriff faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said it has identified impunity and lack of respect for the party’s constitution and the rule of law as the major problems that led to the its failure in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections.

Many have expressed the belief that the decision of Mr. Sheriff and his supporters to factionalise the PDP led to its failure in the elections.

The faction, at a media briefing on Monday in Abuja, however said the blame for the losses falls on three governors elected under the platform of the party.

Although the faction did not mention the names of the three governors, it has been engaged in running battles with governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State.

Monday’s press briefing, addressed by the Deputy National Chairman of the faction, Cairo Ojougbo, said ” in all these difficult times only three governors have been the architects of the destruction of the party”.

Mr. Ojougbo said only the governors of “Taraba, Gombe, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers and a few others have been very cooperative and are willing to let the party grow. They have shown maturity, understanding and sagacity in the affairs of the PDP.”

The Beginning of our Downfall

The Sheriff faction recalled that the impact of impunity in the PDP manifested itself for the first time in the 2011 general elections when the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, defeated the PDP in Nasarawa State.

“We had a sitting governor then who could not deliver. This was the first warning against impunity. It was ignored.

“Then in 2015 we had governors in Benue, Kogi, Niger, Jigawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Bauchi and Adamawa. We lost in all these states for a common reason, the governors were not unpopular but they imposed their surrogates and the people voted them out. We paid for impunity,” Mr. Ojougbo said.

The faction argued that an analysis of the 2015 general election showed that all the ten states the party lost were in the northern part of the country, adding that even south-south states would not have survived if former President Goodluck Jonathan did not hail from the region. It said the figures that emanated from the south-east were also “abysmal”.

Mr. Ojougbo said the outcome of the 2015 election proved that although governors are very important in winning elections for a party, they do not necessarily determine the outcome.

“The running of the party should therefore not be left entirely to their whims and caprices. The party must have a say because party is supreme. In the case of Mimiko’s Ondo, the party was denied the valuable say,” he said.

The party leader also said that the faction had cried to all concerned ahead of the Edo election that the party hierarchy in the state was defective and that the Leadership needed to be changed “to allow the 60 stalwarts of the PDP who defected to APC return to the fold.”

“Of course the governors refused. There was no surprise to the result.

“In Ondo State, the script was written in 2013 when Governor Mimiko returned to PDP. All members he met on the ground left the party for him and he took over the PDP. The structure was handed over to the Labour Party.

“If Oke had not gone to AD and Mimiko managed leadership sportsmanly, PDP would have won the election convincingly.

“In the election, APC scored 244,842 votes while PDP scored 150,380 and AD scored 126,889 votes. It is a fact that the AD votes belong to PDP and the simple arithmetic shows why PDP lost; our votes went to Oke and AD,” he said.

He also said that when Mr. Mimiko returned to the PDP, his fellow governors appealed to him to allow for harmonization but he refused.

He said all the PDP members led by Olusola Oke therefore left the party.

Mr. Ojougbo said in choosing a candidate to succeed him, Mr. Mimiko did not allow original members of the PDP to buy forms.

“He mainly anointed Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) who was returned unopposed.

“Party members cried to the high heavens that Jegede is from the central zone where Mimiko hails from. Their cries fell on deaf ears,” he said.

He also said the primary election organised by the Sheriff faction had six participants which returned Jimoh Ibrahim as the candidate.

“Jimoh hails from the South. He campaigned vigorously and convinced the people to vote for him. But alas Mimiko will not allow him carry the party flag.

“Mimiko used the instrumentality of state government to overwhelm Jimoh but could not overwhelm the masses and voters. Of course the result is out there for all to see,” he said.

Sheriff Independent of Buhari, APC

Mr. Ojougbo also said the accusation that Mr. Sheriff was doing the bidding of Nigeria’s ruling APC is not tenable.

He said it was PDP governors who invited Mr. Sheriff to be the chairman of the party.

He also said when he (Sheriff) assumed office, he put in place a committee to conduct a National Convention to “elect people of good character to run the affairs of the party”.

He added that Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State was appointed the chairman of the zoning committee.

“The Governors met and decided that Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff should continue in office.

The question is ‘was it Mr. President, General Buhari or the APC who sourced Senator Sheriff for the PDP’?

“Was it the APC who chaired the zoning committee that zoned chairmanship to Sheriff? The answer is No.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians to discountenance the idea that Sheriff is working for the APC. Sheriff was offered the senatorial ticket in the last general election after he left the APC. Senator Ali Modu Sheriff is a complete PDP faithful whose desire it is to reposition the party.

“Truth be told, Sheriff is insisting that power be returned to the people,” he said.

Mr. Ojougbo also spoke about the belief that Mr. Sheriff was a sponsor of the terrorist group, Boko Haram,

He said it is on record that when Mr. Sheriff was governor of Borno State, he suppressed and completely routed the Boko Haram.

“Boko Haram Killed 5 members of his family in the process of his fight against them.

“But when the current Governor of Borno State, Shettima, took over office, Boko Haram became emboldened, virulent and malignant.

“Note also that Shettima became governor because Boko Haram killed the man who was to be governor. His death paved way for the emergence of Shettima who willingly and deliberately encouraged Boko Haram.

“Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff has taken to court the Attorney General of Borno State who claimed that Sheriff is Boko Haram in Suit No. FCT/HC/CU/2494/2016 between Senator Dr. Ali Modu Sheriff vs. Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan and 3 others which is currently ongoing,” he said.

Mr. Ojougbo said although the faction does not comment on individuals, but “for the sake of the survival of the party we take exceptions to the utterances of Prince Adeyeye”.

He said Mr. Adeyeye, spokesperson of the Ahmed Makarfi PDP faction, is attacking Mr. Sheriff’s faction believing that he will be awarded the governorship ticket of Ekiti State.

The sheriff faction, however, warned that if the PDP is not restructured, even if he ( Adeyeye) is awarded the ticket “which we know Fayose will not do, it will be an exercise in futility and a waste of time like Eyitayo Jegede’s”.

Mr. Ojougbo said Mr. Sheriff is the agent of change for the PDP and multiparty democracy in Nigeria.

“Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff remains the only and authentic National Chairman of the PDP and the NWC remains the only administrative body authorized by law to run the party.”

He concluded the briefing by calling on all party members to unite or the PDP will be dead forever.

FAAN Launches Lagos Airport Automated Car Park

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched the Lagos Airport automated car park. This modern car park is located at the Domestic Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. According to Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu who is FAAN’s Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, the newly acquired facility would generate more revenue for the country.

The Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Saleh Dunoma, also said; “This modern facility is uniquely designed to ensure that parking fees are paid at the payment booths by its end-users before they exit the car park unlike in the past when they were paying at the entry point.

This facility also has a special billing system which is programmed to give the end-users the exact amount for time spent at the parking lots. The inauguration of this facility is in line with FAAN’s desire to give passengers and airport users improved air travel experience in line with global best practices.”

The new facility among other things would automatically eliminate long queues in the area; reduce traffic, speed up passenger and vehicular movements at the terminal. It would also ensure seamless facilitation of passengers and airport users.

According to the statement, this development would also key into President Buhari’s commitment to transparency since all federal government agencies revenue-points have been mandated to pay all revenues generated into ‘Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account’ (TSA).

Lagos Approves Death Penalty For Kidnappers Whose Victims Die In Captivity

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday okayed capital punishment as penalty for kidnappers, if their victims die in captivity.

This followed the adoption of a report presented by Mrs Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Petitions, Human Rights and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

Tejuosho presented the report of a Stakeholders meeting on a bill titled: “A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Prohibition of the Act of Kidnapping and for Other Connected Purposes”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the bill was sponsored by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

The bill prescribed life sentence for kidnappers, if their victims did not die in captivity.
The bill states that any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains, captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will, commits an offence, and is liable on conviction to death sentence.

The bill, which criminalised attempt to kidnap, also stipulates life imprisonment for attempted kidnap.

Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person. This attracts seven years imprisonment.

The lawmakers also approved 25 years imprisonment for whoever threatens to kidnap another person through phone call, e-mail, text message or any other means of communication.

The bill provides that any person, who knowingly or willfully allows his premises, building or a place or belonging under his control to be used for the keeping of a kidnapped person is guilty of an offence under the law and is liable to 14 years imprisonment without an option of fine.

NAN reports that the lawmakers amended some sections of the bill while debating the report before its adoption.

The bill, which is aimed at ensuring zero tolerance for kidnapping, however, awaits third reading before it will be sent to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for assent.

Don’t Blame Buhari For Hunger In Nigeria – Fr. Mbaka

Catholic Priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Emene, Revd Fr. Ejike Mbaka has called for prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari and has absolved him of blame in the country’s economic challenges.

Fr. Mbaka, however, reassured Nigerians that the current economic condition in the country will soon be over.

In a sermon to mark the opening of the 2016/2017 Legal Year, organised by Enugu State Judiciary, Mbaka who prophesied Buhari’s victory in the 2015 presidential election recalled that, in 2012, he prophesied that doom time would follow the oil boom, if there was no good planning of the country’s resources.

“But, the past administration was one of ‘LOOT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.’ Look at a place like the Niger Delta and one of them became president and did nothing for his people and now, you want Buhari to perform magic. But, we are a mono economy and every country depending on oil is suffering the same fate with Nigeria today.

“Buhari is not the cause of hunger in the country; not the cause of starvation in Nigeria.

“The tap root of Nigeria’s economy has been cut; Buhari is just trying to hold a rolling vehicle; a vehicle that the brakes have been destroyed.

“So, Buhari is not the cause. If (former President Goodluck) Jonathan was the president today, the situation would have been worse.[/color]

“Economic recession will not last long; the solution will come in a super natural way.

“Just like Ebola, we thought everybody would die; where is it now? Recession will go as Ebola has gone.

So, all we have to do is to pray for Buhari; he has good agenda but, many around him are planning to pull him down.”

On the recent arrest of judges by the Department of State Services (DSS), Mbaka said Nigerians are beginning to lose hope in the Judiciary, “but with Buhari’s revolutionary experience going on, I am not saying that all who are accused are guilty but, I am saying that judges ought to remain incorruptible.

“If they are corrupt, they should be arrested and whoever arrests them should be praised.

“So, if president Buhari has that courage, that lion heart, to touch the tiger’s tail, he is a hero.”

Mbaka lauded the performance of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and described it as “an exemplary display of visionary leadership which has enthroned peace, uniting diverse political interests.”

He called on the people of the state to continue to support his government which he said has been anointed by God.

In his speech to mark the legal year, Acting Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice N.P Emehelu commended the governor for giving rapid response to the needs of the Judiciary by providing the necessary requirements for the appointments of judges in the state as well as facilitating supervisory duties of the Customary Court of Appeal.

She made a request for a befitting Customary Court of Appeal complex in Enugu as well as complexes for the high courts and Magistrate Courts outside Enugu and called for more slots to be given the judiciary for appointment of high court judges following depletion in the number of judges occasioned by deaths and retirements.

Justice Emehelu thanked the Bar and Bench in the state for their cooperation urging them to redouble their efforts for a quicker and better dispensation of justice.

“I have noted the concern and suggestions of the Nigeria Bar Association as well as those of the learned magistrates and I wish to assure that God willing, we will partner with you in addressing those concerns and issues.”

Plane Carrying Brazilian Footballers Crashes In Colombia, Killing 25 People

The first division Chapecoense football team was among the 72 passengers and nine crew on board the plane when it crashed around 10:15pm (local time) on Monday after reporting electrical issues.

There were reports of at least six survivors being found before rescue operations were suspended due to heavy rain in the crash site, in a mountainous area near the international airport in the city of Medellin.

"Tonight it was reported that a plane coming from Viru Viru airport in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, which should have landed at Jose Maria Cordova, airport had gone off course," a Colombian rescue official, Mauricio Parodi, earlier told reporters.

Authorities and rescuers were immediately activated but poor weather conditions made the crash site only accessible only by road.

"It's a tragedy of huge proportions," Medellin's Mayor Federico Gutierrez Gutierrez told Blu Radio on his way to the site.

The South American soccer federation cancelled all activities until further notice as a result of the crash.

The CONMEBOL federation said in a statement that its president, Alejandro Dominguez, was on his way to Medellin.

The Chapecoense team had been due to face Atletico Nacional of Medellin in the first leg of Wednesday's Sudamericana final, South America's equivalent of the Europa League.

It was the first time the small club from Chapeco had ever reached the final of a major South American club competition but they were underdogs against a club going for a rare double after winning the Copa Libertadores in July.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Chapecoense said "may God accompany our athletes, officials, journalists and other guests traveling with our delegation".

The team said it would refrain from any further statements until it had fully evaluated the extent of the crash.

Lady Who Followed A Man To Hotel Bleeds Continuously After Sex

“This goes out to young ladies; beware of the kind of company you keep especially that of strange men you know nothing about. In today’s world, many atrocities are being committed and the most painful part of it is that the culprits keep getting away with their numerous crimes.

“I wouldn’t want to base this on the present situation of the country because these acts has been in existence for as long as I can tell. Here goes the story of sexually abused young girl and possibly, almost used for ritual by one Mr.Emeka Augustine Ozulike popularly known as (Obele), who hails from Akwa Village in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State. Sources have it that he’s a successful business man with his businesses scattered all about the Main Market, Onitsha.
“The abused girl pleaded for utmost anonymity but summed up courage to share her story which she believes is going to serve as an eye opener for young girls in our society. It all began when a strange call entered her phone from this man. Who consistently claimed that she gave him her number which was a blatant lie. She later discovered that someone she regarded as friend actually gave her contact to the man. At first, she was very reluctant to speak to this stranger but the pressure became unbearable that she was left with no option than to tell him off which she did but that didn’t help as well.

“The said Emeka continued saying that his intentions were genuine, that he actually want her for a wife. On hearing this, the girl calmed a little and decided to be a little bit more civil with this criminal. They eventually established a neutral conversation between themselves but the girl was still very skeptical about this Emeka guy. He suggested to her that it will be okay for them to see each other so that she will be more convinced that he’s real which she agreed to but distance seems to be a barrier at that point in time because they both stayed in different locations.

“One fateful day, an important business had to bring Emeka to the city of residence of this girl; he called her as usual and informed her about his visit. She reluctantly went to the hotel where he lodged to see him, on getting there; they met at the hotel restaurant. They sat for a while and the man suggested they go to his room so the can talk comfortably. She hesitated at first and later obliged. On getting to his room, he offered her a drink (a box juice), unknowingly to her,the juice was drugged. The last she remembered was taking the drink andpossibly waking up Unclad after several hours of being knocked out by the juice.
“She cried and later left in shame because she never planned to give this beast her cookie just yet. Getting home that evening, she noticed she was bleeding. Being a young girl, she thought it was her monthly flow but the bleeding continued. She tried to reach the bastard on phone, after several missed calls; he neither picked nor returned her calls. At that point in time, in the midst of the bleeding, it just dawned on her that this man had used and possibly dumped her.

“Now her fear is the abnormal bleeding she’s experiencing because after all medical checks and series of tests performed on her, she’s normal with no fracture anywhere inside her system but the blood continues to flow. She’s very scared and confused having been proven Okay medically. She decided to cry out to the public tohelp her pass this message across to Emeka Augustine Ozulike ( aka OBELE) to come and undo whatever he did to her while he drugged her in his hotel room.
