Why Jonathan, PDP Are Angry With Jega – Punch Reveals

There were revelations in Abuja on Monday on why President Goodluck Jonathan and the national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party were angry with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

A week-long investigation by our correspondent in Abuja showed that the President and his party are not happy with Jega over his insistence that the commission would use the Permanent Voter Cards for the election.

The PVCs were used for the conduct of the governorship elections in both Ekiti and Osun states, which were won by the PDP and the All Progressives Congress respectively.

Apart from this, the President and the party were also angry that the commission was going ahead with its decision to use card readers.

This technology was however not used in both Ekiti and Osun states elections.

The commission has said that the card reader can only read PVC issued by it and that any person that shows up at the polling unit without a PVC or with a card not issued by INEC will not be able to vote.

It was learnt that the Presidency and the ruling party were not totally against the use of the PVCs, but they were not happy with the use of card readers.

A worker in the Presidency who spoke with our correspondent on Sunday queried the insistence of INEC under the leadership of Jega to go ahead with the two items.

He said, “Now, what we are saying is that yes, the PVCs were used in both Ekiti and Osun governorship elections but the way and manner the PVCs are being distributed now is suspicious.

“Look at the figure of those who have collected from the northern part of the country and look at the figure from the southern part, where President Jonathan hails from.

“If the election is going to be by ethnic sentiment alone, you will know that our President has been defeated already. So, that’s the reason.

“Look at Ogun and Lagos states, which we all know are politically sophisticated. Why are the electorates not picking their PVCs? We are worried.”

In terms of PVCs collection, figures released by the commission indicated that Ogun State is lagging behind among all the states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.

In the state, only 808,590 out of the 1,829,534 registered voters had collected their PVCs. This figure represents a mere 44.20 per cent.

But the commission said that 1,387,401 PVCs had been delivered to the state.

Lagos State with 5,822,207 registered voters had recorded 63.44 per cent of the PVCs collection. This shows that 3,693,355 of the cards had been picked by their owners.

But the commission said that 5,558,062 cards had been delivered for voters in the state.

This means that there are 1,864,707 PVCs yet to be picked by their owners in the state.

When asked whether the refusal of the owners of the PVCs to pick them up could be attributed to Jega, the source said that the commission should embark on more enlightenment.

On the issue of card readers, a member of the National Working Committee of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that there was no way the machine would be effective in the area of accreditation of voters.

When this issue was raised before the commission, an explanatory note presented to our correspondent showed that accreditation of a voter using the card reader is expected to last for about 20 seconds.

A Tottenham fan was left a little red-faced after throwing a £2 coin at Chelsea’s Diego Costa during the Capital One Cup final.
Instead of kicking off and get riled up, like the Spurs fan clearly wanted, Costa instead picked the coin up and put it on his shorts for later.
The Spain international might earn a reported £150,000-a-week, but every little helps.
We’d love to have seen the fans face after watching Costa grab the coin and run off – great work.

Diego ended up having the last laugh anyway, with his second half goal helping seal a 2-0 Chelsea win and the trophy.
Take that haters.

Nicola Shelton was taken aback when she saw the selfie posted to her Facebook page (Picture: Facebook)
An iPhone that its owner thought was gone forever is back in her possession after a stranger accidentally posted a selfie to her Facebook.
Nicola Shelton, 33, had her bag taken while on holiday in Byron Bay – a popular tourist spot in New South Wales, Australia – losing her credit cards, wallet and iPhone.
But in a bizarre chance occurrence, the Melbourne woman ended up recovering the smartphone after its new owner took a selfie – and it was uploaded to her Facebook page.
Believing the man in the photo to be the thief, she reposted the picture with the caption: ‘So this is the low life that stole my bag/iPhone and has decided to take a photo with my phone and post it on my Facebook!! Scum! Bag stolen in Byron bay on February 14, please share to everyone!!!’
After nearly 20,000 shares across Australia, Ms Shelton heard from the man in the selfie, who explained that he had bought the phone from someone without knowing it had been stolen. He later handed it to Byron Bay police, who returned it to Ms Shelton.
‘I’m just amazed by the help from people I don’t even know,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.
‘I’m happy to get my phone back.’

Google Inc. plans to launch a small scale U.S. wireless service and will announce details in the coming months, a top executive at the technology giant said Monday.
The service would be small in scale and not intended to compete with the big four national carriers, Sundar Pichai, who oversees Google’s mobile operating system Android, said in a presentation at an industry conference in Barcelona. Instead, it would be intended to demonstrate technical innovations that the carriers could adopt.
Nonetheless, however small, Google’s entry is likely to send ripples through a business long controlled by Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc., Sprint and T-Mobile .
Mr. Pichai’s comments confirmed earlier reports of the company’s plans to launch a wireless service. Google lacks a cellphone network, but has struck deals with Sprint Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. to resell services on their networks, people familiar with the matter have said.
The executive said Monday that Google would partner with carriers to launch the service.

Edo APC Hails State CAN BOSS For Rejecting Jonathan’s Bribe

Edo APC Hails State CAN BOSS For Rejecting Jonathan’s Bribe

March 2nd, 2015

BY CHUKS EHIRIM – The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has commended the Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Edo State Branch, Bishop Peter O.J Imasuen, for rejecting the four million Naira given to him from the seven billion Naira bribe President Goodluck Jonathan dished out to Christian leaders in the Country, to buy their support in this month’s rescheduled Presidential election.

In a press statement issued by the Edo State Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Godwin Erhahon and made available to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, APC said it “can now reveal authoritatively that Bishop Imasuen was one of the few State Chairmen of CAN who were Godly and patriotic enough to reject the bribe which was given to Christian leaders to campaign for President Jonathan and condemn APC Presidential Candidate, General Mohammadu Buhari”.

He added that “CAN inside sources confirmed to APC at the weekend in Benin City, the Edo State Capital, that over four hundred pastors in Edo State, majority of whom are of the Pentecostal churches, shared from the bribe with some of them getting between five hundred thousand and fifty thousand naira each”.

Erhahon posited further, that “a few others from the so- called super churches received as much as two million naira each because they claimed that their churches have more members.

“The sources further revealed that the leader of the CAN national body alone took three billion naira and left the balance four billion for three of his colleagues in the unholy deal to administer as they wished but with the instruction that pastors of Catholic churches be left out.

“Some of the Bishops who were said to be dissatisfied with the greedy manner of their boss were said to have wondered aloud whether their “oga” was aiming at buying another aircraft. One of the aggrieved female Christian leaders who pleaded for her name not to be mentioned told APC that Christian Association of Nigeria has been turned to Mammon Association of Nigeria with priests receiving bribes to preach falsehood and hatred at the pulpit, thus misleading their congregation against God and man.

“She advised all churches whose pastors preached openly against Mohammadu Buhari to demand their share of the bribe from their pastors as they were paid handsomely to vilify General Buhari. Quoting from 1 Cor 6:9, she reminded those who received the bribe to preach hate sermon against General Buhari that both the greedy and the slanderers will not inherit the kingdom of God and therefore advised their congregation to disown those pastors who worship mammon in the house of God.

“Another reliable source further revealed that seeing how the popularity of President Jonathan has dimmed further after the shift of the election date from February 14 till March 28, the ring leader of the corrupt pastors is already finding ways to make peace with General Buhari ahead of the election. APC commends Bishop Imasuen for upholding the teaching of Christ and boosting the integrity of the Edo man”, Erhahon concluded.

ARE LIVERPOOL BACK ON TRACK?

Danny Murphy: How Manchester City set-up let Liverpool duo thrive

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy expands on his TV analysis of how Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini's team selection suited Liverpool in the Reds' 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday.
Liverpool's 3-4-3 formation definitely suits Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho, but the way Manchester City were set up on Sunday allowed the pair to thrive.
Lallana and Coutinho were playing either side of Raheem Sterling in the Reds' attack, and both were looking to come in from the flanks when their side was in possession.
City were playing in a 4-4-2 shape, with Fernandinho as their only defensive-minded midfielder.

Liverpool 2-1 Man City: 'Incredible' Reds delight Rodgers
The Brazilian was looking around and spotting Lallana and Coutinho coming in behind him, but he could only ever pick up one of them.
That meant the other man could get on the ball in the pockets of space between City's defence and midfield, in what you would normally call the number 10 position, to try to do some damage.
Lallana or Coutinho did not only find space well, they used it too, and frequently got into dangerous positions.
Both men played a key role in Liverpool's impressive attacking play even before Coutinho curled home his brilliant winner.

Lallana and Coutinho work hard in City's half

A big part of Liverpool making their current system work is their pressing game when the opposition have possession.
Lallana and Coutinho did that a lot at Anfield on Sunday, with a great example being when Coutinho stole the ball off Vincent Kompany and started the move that led to Jordan Henderson scoring their first goal.

Adam Lallana touches vs Man City

Adam Lallana touches v Man City
They both covered a lot of ground but neither of them had to track back deep into their own half when City attacked because Liverpool's wing-backs Alberto Moreno and Lazar Markovic were there to deal with any threat out wide.
That meant Lallana and Coutinho could stay upfield and do most of their work - attacking and defensive - in City's half.

Philippe Coutinho touches vs Man City

Philippe Coutinho touches vs Man City
Their movement was superb and, along with Sterling, their runs gave Liverpool's deeper midfielders plenty of options when they were in possession.

Man City asking for trouble

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has come in for some stick this week for playing with two strikers in Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League defeat by Barcelona and surrendering midfield.
He again played with two front men at Anfield but, rather than his formation, it was his midfield selection that allowed Liverpool's front players to have so much joy.
You can play a midfield four and keep things tight but you need to have four compact and disciplined midfielders.
City, with Yaya Toure alongside Fernandinho in the middle and David Silva and Samir Nasri on the left and right, did not have that at Anfield.
Fernandinho was the only one out of that quartet who was looking to defend, and obviously that meant he was always stretched.

Fernandinho's touches vs Liverpool

Fernandinho touches vs Liverpool
When he went over to close down Lallana, Coutinho got on the ball, and vice versa.
The way to stop that, and prevent City's full-backs from having to be dragged inside to help deal with those two, would have been for City's midfield to drop deeper, ideally with different personnel.
James Milner would have been more disciplined alongside Fernandinho and stopped Liverpool from finding so much space in front of City's defence.

Where next for City's title defence?

Pellegrini fitted a lot of his big names into his line-up but I don't think it suited the opposition.
It is the wrong mentality when you go in with that many attack-minded players in the big games like this one and try to play a midfield four.
Play media
Liverpool 2-1 Man City: Pellegrini says City's 'style' must return
For example, I don't think Silva in particular enjoys playing wide. Defensively you are losing a bit there and he tends to do his better attacking work in a number 10 position anyway.
Of course, it is easier to say that with hindsight after a defeat - and City won the Premier League playing this way last season.
So Pellegrini can rightly mention that when he is criticised for sticking with this system. It is obviously something he believes in and I admire him for that.
But sometimes when you are not playing well and results are not going for you, you have to adapt and I do not think City have done that as much as they could and should have this season.
And this defeat has left them with a mountain to climb in terms of their title defence, especially when you consider that they are not playing well anyway.

Ambode An Epitome Of Efficiency

Ambode An Epitome Of Efficiency

Editor’s note: Akinwunmi Ambode is the Lagos state gubernatorial candidate under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In this piece by Paul Ojenagbon, a public affairs commentator from Lagos and a school mate of Ambode, he describes the gubernatorial candidate as embodiment of discipline and efficiency who can take Lagos state to the next level in the forthcoming governorship elections.
Story highlights:
  • All Progressives Congress (APC) is the most progressive party in the country today.
  • Ambode has the required competence, experience and knowledge on how to take Lagos to the next level.
  • His acts of generosity and compassion run to immense proportion
One would naturally feel proud to share the same Alma Matar with the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate for Lagos State, Akinwunmi Akinbode. It is even double in our case because we were not only school mates at the Federal Government College, Warri but also at the University of Lagos, where he was my senior.
As Alumni comrades would normally put it: we are both a “Great Fedgocowosans” for the FGCW connection and “Great Akokites” for UNILAG. So much for Alumni kinship that rekindles the good old days. For the gold fish that he’s become as ace writer James Hadley Chase would put it,Ambode no longer has a hiding place as his past would be rewound to the present but thankfully for good in this respect.
Hold on a minute, it is not for our being of the same schools that I would cast my vote for Ambode in the April 14, 2015 election. I would only cast my vote for him because I am convinced that he’s the best guy to take over at Alausa from Governor Babatunde Fashola. I am convinced that he has the required competence, experience and administrative know-how to take Lagos to the next level for the reasons that I would adduce shortly.
I have followed the career of Ambode keenly for several years and I am least surprised he’s come this far. At FGCW, Ambode was an embodiment of discipline and efficiency. He was not only a perfect but as the head of school entertainment at the time (do students love to be entertained!), he brought a lot of smiles to the faces of students. Unilag is a much larger academic community and being such an”ocean” of a setting, there is very little I know of his activities there. Besides, I came in just as he was leaving but I have no doubt he distinguished himself as usual.  Our Briton-born Principal, Late P.H. Davies whom students fondly called ‘Papa’( and he truly was one) prepared us very for life after FGCW especially for leadership roles.
If Ambode ever ran for the exalted positions of Students’ Representative Council Secretary or Assistant Secretary at FGCW that were keenly contested with manifestoes, intensive campaigns and debates, all Ambode probably needed to do was to play the students some of the popular “old school” songs and have them gyrating during the Saturday Night Entertainment. He would not need to say much, just give the students what they wanted and he would be their man!!. One could imagine the students screaming wildly “carry go, you don win!” in Aluta Continua chants.
As governor, he can jog back such teenage experiences to bring about a huge entertainment industry in the state. Accepted that the stakes are higher now and much more is required than just being the students’ entertainer, fortunately for Ambode – as it’s often said, every great story begins with a humble beginning. His 27 years of meritorious and innovative service in Lagos State Civil Service are well documented and known by all that this writer needs not recount. He has more than paid his dues for the state’s number one job.
My bet on Ambode is not because we share the same Alma Matar. I must first be convinced he is competent because Lagos deserves the very best. The writer is one heck of a self opinionated person who is never swayed by the syndrome or by what others are saying but rather by what he observes to be true and has been able to have informed opinion.
It is a lonely road to walk and co-travellers are few made of those who live by principles in a society that is patently lacking of idealism. It is not a surprise that my hero of the second republic led by the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) was Alhaji Balarabe Musa, the impeached governor of Kaduna State! Along with some classmates and a small circle of friends at the time, we never ceased to eulogize him for standing out for his ideals. He was principled to the point that he would not succumb to the blackmail of the NPN dominated State House of Assembly that expected him to “settle” them to keep his seat. Balarabe lost out as Governor but he never lost my respect over the years and I’m disappointed he’s become so obscure in the present dispensation. Added to him are many heroes of history I read about who have been a source of inspiration even at a tender age.
Ambode is a natural leader of men and a builder of bridges. At the time our Old Students’ Association (Lagos Chapter) ran into a hiatus that came out of a major crisis when most ex-students were fast losing interest in the affairs of the association, it took the pragmatic leadership of a much younger Ambode with deft moves to revive the Association and bring it to life again.
It was a feat which the senior members at the time could not achieve but a younger and junior Ambode did as interventionist president. Yours sincerely had to politely turn down the offer to serve in his Executive having just served out a two year term as the General Secretary because of not too pleasant memories.
Habitually, not one to go looking for the big men in power for what to get out of them, the writer kept from Ambode at Alausa where he held several key positions except when we met at association meetings. But many colleagues who regularly went to see him had much to say of how he had been of great help to them in several ways in resolving various issues.
His acts of generosity and compassion run to immense proportion. There are many students at various levels Ambode is paying their school fees, widows he is helping to get back their groves, area boys he is helping to rehabilitate, scores of problems he is taking upon himself every day to solve for others when in service and out service. Unless a leader has such compassion, he would steal so much in office and deny his people the needed service, the good things of life or dividends of democracy.
Ambode’s experience and competence as a public administrator, innovative accountant and technocrat are what a complex state like Lagos needs because he would hit the ground running once sworn in. The fears that his administration would multi-tax Lagosians (because of his background) are unfounded. In any case, he has even promised to address genuine cases of multi-taxation and high tax burden.
Another factor that stands in favour of Ambode is the APC ticket. Whatever critics would say and with every sense of objectivity, it is still the most progressive party in the country today.
All the APC states especially in the South West are doing quite well; even the so called poor ones have been able to navigate and adopt innovative ways to generate attract higher revenues for developmental projects. The evidence is there- be it in Lagos Ogun, Oyo, Osun or Edo State, APC governments are performing but one is not saying the party does not have its own share of the warts in the Nigerian system( if we are looking for out saints, they are probably only in Rome after a hard search!). Even Ekiti was choking in the steam of meaningful development before the surprise ouster that many were surprised the electorate turned out the way it did but time will certainly tell.
The same cannot be said for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). Whether at the centre or in the states in the last sixteen years of democratic dispensation, except in a handful of states including Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers and one or two others, the impact of progress hasn’t been as profound. It would be a big gamble for Lagos to lose out of the league of progressive states if it falls into the claws of the PDP but that is also left to Lagosians to decide on April 14,2015.
