Obasanjo Will Remain In History For Bringing GSM To Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan calls him his political “father”. Ordinary Nigerians have have long ago been divided in accordance with their disposition towards him. While some consider him to be Nigeria’s “hero”, others accuse him of our contry’s hardships. Whichever camp you might belong to, there is no denying that Olusegun Obasanjo, who clocked 78 today, has left a notable imprint in Nigeria’s history.
Writing for Naij.com, Godwin Eruriere says Obasanjo will forever be remembered as the one who brought the Global System of Mobile communications to Nigeria and ensured employment of millions of Nigerians.
A good father always calculates how his children will survive after he is no longer present.
When Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was president, he made decisions that are now a legacy to all citizens of Nigeria. To me, many Nigerians are happy and content today because of what Chief Obasanjo did while he was in the office. So the way things are currently turning out is unfortunate.
Let me share with you my opinion on the issue of job creation. As a president, you need to consider what effects this or that resolution will have in the long term. As a president, you have to be able to look into the future and analyze if this or that scheme will continue to work.
Nigeria Immigration Service (or, rather, Disservice) has been no good at job creation. It is clear that we will always need more hands to handle existing companies, ministries and whatnot.
Obasanjo brought about the GSM. This alone has created countless workplaces all over the country. The benefits of the GSM business are being enjoyed by almost everyone.
Where all people working with MTN Nigeria, GLO, Airtel and Etisalat would have been employed otherwise? The same question goes to phone and phone accessories sellers (both individual entrepreneurs and dealers like Slot that are employing people on their own), phone repairers, those printing and selling recharge cards, engineers installing and maintaining masts for telecommunication companies… The list is endless, and I estimate that tens of millions are employed and being paid.
Having said all of the above, I must confess I don’t feel like anyone else has fulfilled their promises of creating jobs for Nigerians.
Also, think about international companies like Nokia, LG, Samsung and others that have come to Nigeria to stay — all thanks to Obasanjo’s efforts.
To sum all of this up, I think it’s fair to say that virtually no one would claim that they are not enjoying the fruits of the breakthrough made by Chief Obasanjo. I personally will forever be grateful.
As far as I am concerned, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo deserves National Honours for implementing the job creation dream into reality. Anyone can exchange WhatsApp messages on their phone, communicate via Facebook and Twitter social platforms, buy and sell stuff online, make online payments, read news, make comments, use email service, etc.
I am sure many of you will disagree with this praising of Obasanjo. But what if I seized your phones for a month? I’m sure you would feel like you no longer exist!
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has provided us Nigerians with the means of survival. It is a pity some people are not appreciating his efforts.

NANS Blasts Obanikoro, Denies GEJ

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared Musiliu Obanikoro as unfit
to be a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in view of what it called “the prominent role” he played in the Ekiti state election scandal which was recently exposed by Captain Sagir Koli.
The students made their position known yesterday during a protest they staged in Ikeja, the Lagos state capital.
Led by the NANS Vice President (External Affairs) Ogunkuade Oluwatosin, the students called on Obanikoro to take perpetual leave of politics and leadership aspirations in Nigeria, saying his actions have not only destroyed the fabric of democracy but also eroded the hopes of Nigerian students that the ideal of democracy will ever be celebrated in the country.

Oluwatosin also denied rumours that Nigeria students have endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for the election, explaining that the meeting convened by Jude Imagwe, the senior special assistant to President Jonathan on students and youths, was attended only by some selected youths and a minute fraction of the NANS executive.
He wondered why any right-thinking Nigerian student would endorse President Jonathan for a second term, drawing attention to the deaths recorded in student communities, especially in the northeastern and northwestern parts of Nigeria, as well as the numerous strikes which have adversely affected academic stability in the country.
It will be recalled that Ogunkuade, was arrested on the orders of Governor Ayo Fayose for addressing a crowd during the presidential campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Doyin Okupe Comes For Goodluck Jonathan Critics

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has threatened that henceforth, anyone who describes President Goodluck Jonathan with ridiculous and unprintable names will not be spared.

Okupe threatened to “forcefully train” those whose parents failed to take out time to train while growing up with a view to correct the alleged decay.
In a series of posts on twitter, Okupe argued that although he is a grandfather, the “rascality” being displayed by Jonathan’s critics “is not restricted to any particular age group”.  He insisted that being a social critic does not give those always lampooning Jonathan the leeway to abuse and malign the President’s character. “Being a critic is no licence to insult and abuse government officials; most especially the President of the nation. “
The controversial presidential aide is seen in political circles as the ‘attack dog’ of the presidency and he has being consistent in defending his boss against perceived political opponents.
But, are these threats in order?

Chatham House Hosts Aviation Minister

Nigeria’s Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka was hosted on Tuesday, 3rd March by the leadership of Chatham House’s Africa Programme, including the Head of the programme, Dr. Alex Vines.
Chatham House Hosts Aviation Minister
Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka
Minister Chidoka met with Chatham House to discuss President Goodluck Jonathan’s full commitment to democracy, peace, and security in Nigeria. He also emphasized the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) strong history of upholding democratic principles.
Chidoka insisted that every effort must be made to replicate the same model of free and fair election that the world witnessed with President Jonathan’s 2011 victory.
“The discussion with Chatham House was very positive,” said Mr. Chidoka. “We reviewed the facts at hand leading up to the presidential election in Nigeria. The Nigerian people are being given a choice between President Jonathan, a democrat by instinct and record, and his opponent, ‘reformed’ democrat. This is a critical distinction.”
Additionally, while in London, Chidoka gave interviews to BBC’s HARD talk, The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, Sky News, NBC News, BuzzFeed, and Voice of America.
It will be recalled that the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress APC Gen. Muhammadu Buhari was at Chatham house last week Thursday to discuss his plans for Nigeria and reassure the country that he was fit enough to rule.

APC To Hold One-Million-Man March This Saturday

In a bid to neutralise the effect of the visits of President Goodluck Jonathan to Lagos, chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, led by former Governor Bola Tinubu and Governor Babatunde Fashola, will on Saturday hold a One-Million-Man March.

Lagos
, which has the highest number of voters in the country, will be a major battleground between the Peoples Democratic Party and the APC. Addressing journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, the Lagos State coordinator of the APC Campaign Organisation, Mr. James Faleke, said the walk would begin from Maryland through Allen Avenue and end at Alausa, behind the Ikeja City Mall.

He said, “In order to psychologically prepare the minds of our voters and give a psychological defeat to the opposition, we are planning a one-million-man march on Saturday by 8a.m. It will commence at Maryland through Allen Avenue and will end behind Shoprite, Alausa.“The walk will be inaugurated by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. It will be led by Governor Fashola, Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the Lagos State APC governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, and our vice-presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).“President Goodluck Jonathan will not get majority of the votes in Lagos even if he relocates to the state.

”Faleke, who represents Ikeja federal constituency at the House of Representatives, said the APC was not intimidated by Jonathan’s visits to the state. He said, rather, it was Jonathan that was jittery ahead of the elections as he had been doling out dollars to several traders in Lagos.

The legislator, however, boasted that even if Jonathan spent the next three weeks in Lagos, he would still lose because the people of Lagos were ready for change.

He said the APC would win in at least 26 states of the federation in the general elections that would hold on March 28 and April 11.He said, “By God’s grace, we shall win a minimum of 26 states.

Mr. President knows this and that is why he has been coming to the South-West. He spent five days in Lagos distributing dollars. Unknown to him, the people have made up their minds not to vote for him.“Why is he just coming to the South-West to distribute tax payers’ money?”Faleke said Jonathan had become intimidated by the APC presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and that was why the President only started fighting insecurity six weeks to the election.

He said, “We thank God for the achievements of the military in recent times. The question is what they refused to do in six years, they woke up after seeing that Nigerians were ready for this change and decided to embark on retracing their steps within three weeks.“What was amiss before is that the Nigerian military which is respected worldwide could not handle common insurgents in six years but in just three weeks, they have been able to come out and do well?”

Woman dug up father’s grave to find hidden will but found only booze and fags

Woman dug up father's grave to get 'hidden will' but found only booze and fags
Melanie Nash has admitted digging up her father’s grave (Picture: Police)
A woman has admitted digging up her father’s grave to look for his ‘real will’.
However, Melanie Nash, 53, didn’t end up any richer – she just found vodka and cigarettes.
She was one of four accused in the plan to open Eddie Nash’s vault in Colebrook, New Hampshire, then rifle through his coffin last May in a scene a prosecutor compared to an Edgar Allan Poe story.
Police said she felt she was shorted in her share of the inheritance after her father died in 2004. They didn’t find a will in the casket.
Nash, who faced trial in March, instead agreed to plead guilty to charges of criminal mischief, interference with a cemetery, conspiracy, and abuse of a corpse. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 5.
Two others pleaded guilty; a third person was acquitted.
Nash told police she did not receive anything when her father died and had been thinking of digging up the grave for years to prove that her sister, Susie Nash, ‘hid the will.’ Susie Nash has said there was only one will when her father’s estate plan was done in 1995 and everyone involved knew about it.
In a written statement to police last June, Melanie Nash wrote that she met up with the others to go to the cemetery.
She wrote: ‘All this was done for the right reasons and I know my father would be OK with it.’
She ended her statement with: ‘What we all did up my father’s coffin, Eddie Nash, looking for documents. We did it with respect.’
Her lawyer argued her statements were given before she was informed of her right against self-incrimination. But a judge ruled that she freely came to the police station after a warrant had been issued for her arrest and voluntarily gave her statements.
Eddie Nash, who died of a heart attack at 68, started an equipment business in 1979 still run by his family. He’s since been reburied.
After her sister pleaded guilty, Susie Nash told The Caledonian Record that she is relieved the case is at last resolved but that the effects will linger.
‘It still leaves an impact on you,’ she said. ‘Every time I visit the cemetery, I will be thinking of this.’

Surrender or face death, Chadian President warns Shekau

President Idriss Deby
President Idriss Deby of Chad on Wednesday called on Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, to surrender or face death.
Derby told a news conference in N’djamena, that he knows the whereabouts of Shekau, who, according to him, was sighted in Dikwa , a village in Borno State two days ago.
“Abubakar Shekau must surrender. We know where he is. If he doesn’t give himself up he will suffer the same fate as his compatriots,” he said.
“He (Shekau) was in Dikwa two days ago. He managed to get away but we know where he is. It’s in his interests to surrender,” Deby added.
Chadian troops earlier this week liberated the village which is about 85 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital from Boko Haram.
During a battle for the village, the Chadian   soldiers killed over 100 Boko Haram insurgents.
The insurgents were said to have fled to a   huge building where they were found inside wardrobes by the troops, who   fired volleys of bullets at them.
But in an apparent last act of defiance, a suicide bomber among the fighters climbed into a truck carrying gas canisters and blew it up, killing a Chadian soldier and injuring 34.
A Chadian soldier   told a Reuters reporter visiting the town after fighting subsided, that the building was Boko Haram’s command centre.
“They came to hide here as we advanced,” the soldier said, pointing to the bodies in the wardrobes.
The Chadian army spokesman, Col. Azem Bermandoa, who confirmed the killings, said his men chased those who escaped about 15 kilometres   out of the town, where many walls were   sprayed with bullets and most houses lay deserted.
According to the report, the Nigerian military had listed Dikwa as one of the towns it wanted to liberate from the insurgents before the general elections.
Chadian forces had planned to take the town last month, but were ordered back by the Nigeria military , which said it planned to attack it.
But a Chadian soldier in Dikwa claimed that the closest Nigerian soldiers got to the town as of the time of the latest development was 50 kilometres.
Abandoned bombs cause stir in Adamawa town
There is apprehension in Gombi, Adamawa State over 30 bombs said to have been dumped in the area by the men of the Nigerian Air Force.
It was gathered that the   bombs were dumped   three days ago because they had expired and therefore inactive.
Soldiers deployed in the area and vigilante members were said to have surrounded the area out of fear that the weapons could fall into the hands of   insurgents.
One of the soldiers however   said that they later pulled out of the area when they were alerted that the bombs were inactive.
But an indigene of the community told one of our correspondents that they were not convinced that the bombs would not go off.
He said, “As we are talking, we are still agitated because we are not convinced by the explanation that the bombs are useless and would not be taken away by the Boko Haram for other missions.
“When the items were discovered, the soldiers and our vigilante members were called in but the soldiers left when the Air Force explained that the bombs were expired and useless.
“But the vigilante members have refused to relax their watch over the area because they feel the Boko Haram people could steal   and use them against us. We are also of the opinion that the bombs could go off.”
The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, could not be reached for comment as calls to his mobile line did not connect.
Meanwhile, only Monguno out of the several communities   liberated from Boko Haram over a week remains accessible.
Most of the towns largely remain “a no go area” as the military keep watch over them even as residents that fled   in the wake of their capture are still afraid to return.
The Chairman of Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State, Ali   Galgal, paid a visit to Monguno   on Sunday.
It was gathered that Galgal was in the town   to assess the level of destruction that took place during the short reign of the Boko Haram insurgents.
One of those that visited the area with the chairman but who pleaded that his name should not be in print, told one of our correspondents in Maiduguri that “the chairman presented food items to rescued persons.”
He added, “Alhaji Galgal   urged them to consider what happened to them as part of destiny. He asked them to   pray for a lasting peace in Borno State and the country in general.
“The chairman, who went from street to street in Monguno town, found decomposed bodies scattered everywhere. He also found dead bodies in some houses and government structures.
“It was also discovered that the insurgents successful looted many houses and business centres.”

PDP planning to frame Jega, Tinubu, says APC

The All Progressives Congress says it has uncovered a plot by the Peoples Democratic Party to frame the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, in order to justify his sacking.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday that the PDP was plotting to deposit a huge amount of money into the bank account of Jega and make it appear as if the money emanated from Tinubu.
Mohammed said since the PDP had been unable to stop the use of Permanent Voter Cards and card readers, the next step would be a plot by the ruling party to attempt to undermine Jega’s credibility in the eyes of Nigerians so as to get him sacked.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to prepare their minds for the allegations that will soon be levelled against the INEC boss.
He said, “There is a plot to transfer a humongous amount of money into the bank account of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and then claim that the money came from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the APC in order to justify the ongoing plan to sack Prof. Jega so that he won’t conduct the elections.
“Beyond Jega, there is also a plan to credit the bank accounts of some key national institutions with huge amounts of money purportedly from our party, the APC, ostensibly to compromise those institutions.”
The APC spokesperson said there was also a plan by some political parties—especially the ones that have adopted President Goodluck Jonathan—to push for the postponement of the elections until the fight against terrorism is won.
He, however, said the true intention of such parties is to ensure that Jega, whose tenure will end on June 30, is no longer in office.
He said, “There is a plan to use some political parties that are satellites of the PDP to push for the postponement of the elections again. The plot is to get the parties to address a press conference to say the elections should not hold in the North-East until September 2015 because of the ongoing counter-insurgency battle there.
“The intention is to make sure Jega’s tenure expires before the polls, so that they can appoint a malleable card-carrying member of the PDP as INEC chairman to conduct the polls.”

Pastor Arrested For Impregnating 20 Women In His Church, Including Married Ones

pastor arrested for impregnating 20 women in his church claims God commanded him to have sex with them - and their daughters

Timothy Ngwu says he has 13 children with five wives and his mistresses
Police arrested him for abusing members of congregation 'on will of God'
He was reported to authorities by his wife who grew sick of his adultery
Arrested pastor claims the married women's husbands agreed to affairs
A mother-of-eight claims Ngwu impregnated her - and then her daughter

A 53-year-old pastor who reportedly impregnated 20 members of congregation claims the Holy Spirit ordered him to have sex with them.

Nigerian police have now arrested Timothy Ngwu for abusing the young girls and women at Vineyard Ministry of the Holy Trinity.

Ngwu's abusive behaviour was finally reported to the police by his estranged wife Veronica who grew tired of his adulterous behaviour - and reportedly impregnated her young neice.

A spokesperson for the Enugu State Police command told Naij.com he claims to be obeying the 'spiritual' urge to carry out the will of God, 'irrespective of whether the woman is married or not.'

Ebere Amaraizu added: 'When the woman is delivered of the baby, the child remains in the ministry with the mother for life.'

Ngwu told the same website he has 13 children with five different wives and the mistresses God's 'prophetic' will told him to acquire.

He also claims he never had sex with any married woman unless their husbands consented to the Holy Spirit's request.

Calista Omeje and Assumpta Odo both left their husbands to live with the pastor based on these holy commands.

Mother-of-eight Odo said Ngwu impregnated both her and her daughter, whose age is not known.

And Calista - who has 10 children with her husband - said the pastor impregnated her but the baby died. She also revealed that she 'gave' her daughter to him.

The pastor's brother - who did not want to be identified - said he had warned both Ngwu and his family about the self-proclaimed clergyman's behaviour for a long time but they refused to listen.

He claims the arrest is 'God's wrath falling on his brother', adding: 'God's anger has befallen my brother, we have severally appealed to him to stop what he was doing but he refused.

'He has colonised our compound, bearing children with recklessness. He accused us of being jealous of him because he is doing the will of God.'

Pointing at the church's compound, he continued: 'Look at these buildings here... He has converted all of them to himself in the name of vineyard.

'He sacked his betrothed wife who has three children for him and embarked on impregnating married women and young girls. Look at the whole compound littered with children of different sex and age.'

'All members of the vineyard are fools, how can a woman abandon her husband for another man in the name of worshiping God and practice adultery? I cannot get myself involved in this matter.

'Let them sort themselves out with the police but I want the ministry to be shut down completely,' he added.'

Senate In Rowdy Session Over Obanikoro’s Screening

The Senate had a rowdy executive session for about two hours on Wednesday as a result of attempt by Senate President, David Mark, to convince his colleagues to give Musiliu Obanikoro an easy passage, in accordance to the tradition of the upper chamber in the screening of former senators nominated for appointment as ministers.

The Senate had over the years adopted the “take a bow” treatment for nominee ex-senators. Obanikoro was a member of the upper federal legislative chamber between 2003 and 2007 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. His name is among the eight new ministerial nominees before the Senate for consideration.

Members of the opposition All Progressives Congress in the Senate had, last week, vowed to oppose the confirmation of Obanikoro.

Our correspondent learnt that Mark, shortly before plenary and in a bid to ensure that the tradition of the Senate was not broken, immediately ordered a closed-door executive session to iron out the differences between Obanikoro and the opposition senators before the ministerial screening.

One of the senators from the South-West geo – political zone, who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent that the executive session was rowdy while it lasted.

He said, “The Senate President pleaded with us to respect the tradition of the senate by allowing Obanikoro and two other former senators, who would be appearing before us for screening to just take a bow and leave.

“We told him such gesture would not be extended to Obanikoro because of the two petitions against him that were forwarded to the Senate leadership, which he must address in a question-and-answer session.

“The insistence of the senate president that he would not preside over a chamber where the tradition that predated him would be destroyed led to a rowdy session which lasted for over one-and-a-half hour.”

The senator explained that it took the intervention of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to resolve the issue.

According to him, Ekweremadu suggested that the screening and confirmation of Obanikoro should be postponed till a further date pending when the opposition would have a change of mind.

Another senator, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from the North-Central, who also spoke anonymously, confirmed to our correspondent that the screening of Obanikoro had been postponed till next week due to the issues raised against him.

He said, “The opposition senators stuck to their guns that the nominee must address the allegations levelled against him but the Senate President insisted that he would never allow such things to happen.

“We however resolved to suspend the screening of Obanikoro and three others till next week Tuesday, if the opposition senators would not insist that he must be asked some questions. “

The senator further explained that the leadership of the red chamber resolved to take the former Minister of State alongside three others next week.

However, when the Senate resumed plenary, the senate president did not explain the reason for the closed-door session.

“The senate at the executive session discussed issues of national importance,” he said.

Meanwhile, four nominees- Messrs Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa State); Nicholas Ada (Benue State); Augustine Akobundu (Abia State); and Fidelis Nwankwo (Ebonyi State), answered questions from the senators except Akwashiki, who was a senator.

Ada, a professor of education, while responding to questions, said that lack of qualified teachers was responsible for the production of ill-equipped graduates.

He noted that students from “miracle centres” and those who cheat in examinations, and get higher grades usually constitute a great menace to the society as they would do everything to manipulate the system upon graduation.

He said, “So, what we simply do is to try as much as possible that the teachers training programme for the school system is strengthened because what the teacher fails to do, is an irreparable loss and what he does well gives credence to the entire process.

“I would suggest that we go back to the basics. In the time past, we had Grade Two Teachers Training programme; teachers were trained in specific areas. The totality of the teachers was well groomed and he came out as a very refined person.”

On his part, Akobundu, a retired colonel in the army, said the best way to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency was the introduction of the multi-nations military taskforce, made up of soldiers from Benin Republic, Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Nigeria.

“The solution is making sure that we maintain the coalition with our coalition partners to make sure that we rid our nation and their own countries the menace of Boko Haram.

“At the same time, we talk about fighting terrorism through carrot-and-stick. What is going on is the stick. And concurrently, I believe that the Federal Government through the statutory agencies are doing everything to make sure that these Nigerians who have been displaces are given sense of belonging.”

The screening of Obanikoro (Lagos); Hauwa Lawan (Jigawa); Kenneth Kobani (Rivers) and Joel Ikenya (Taraba) has been shifted to Tuesday next week.
