Mu’azu Speaks About Use Of Card Readers

Adamu Mu’azu, the National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, stated that the part of the technical issues encountered with card readers during the accreditation is acceptable.
PDP chairman, who was accredited at his hometown Boto, said there is no perfection in machines as only Almighty God can be perfect.
He denied calls for the nullification of the use of card reader machines for the accreditation of electors.
Mu’azu said: “I cannot arbitrarily call for the cancellation of the usage of the Card Readers and the Permanent Voter Cards. I know professor Jega to be a successful and courageous intellectual and so far he has done very well.”
Likewise, the member representing Dass/Bogoro/Tafawa Balewa constituency in the House of Represenatives, Yakubu Dogara, said the performance of the card reader and the permanent voter cards far surpass their technical challenges.
On his turn, Ali Wakili, the Bauchi South senatorial district aspirant of the All Progressive Congress, who was with success accredited at the Kofa Pada polling unit in Bauchi state, also said the problems encountered were acceptable.
Suleiman Bogoro, the executive secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, on his part, said the use of the card reader would help in handling with the problem of rigging and multiple registration as it used to be in the past.
Meanwhile, three card readers failed to read biometrics of the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Dame Patience.
The chairman of the electoral body Prof Jega while commenting the situation stated that it was was a national embarrassment.

Breaking: Voting Continues On Sunday In 300 Units - INEC

Voting in ongoing general election has been extended to Sunday, March 29, in 300 out of 150,000 polling stations, the electoral commission said, after technical glitches marred polling nationwide.
“Just about 300 polling units out of about 150,000,” spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kayode Idowu, told reporters, when asked about the number of polling station affected by the extension.
Hand-held card readers which scan voter’s biometric data malfunctioned or failed at various polling stations across Africa’s most populous country.
Kayode said there were 109 polling stations where “cards were not read” at all, another 100 stations where there were “issues” with biometric data, while card readers in other areas had battery problems.
The commission had earlier said that given the widespread malfunctioning of card readers, electoral officers had been empowered to manually check voter cards against a hard copy of the electoral roll.
During the election campaign, President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) repeatedly criticised the technology, which is designed to “read” fingerprints and other personal data in 10 seconds.
The main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) backed the use of the devices as a way of combating widespread vote-rigging in previous elections.

Jega Is Responsible For Card Reader Hitches - FFK

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation (PDPPCO), Saturday attacked the chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Pro. Attahiru Jega over the card reader machine glitches during the Presidential  and National Assembly elections, saying  that Nigerians should hold the INEC boss responsible.
In a statement, on Saturday by the Director of Media and Publicity of PDPPCO, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, he said that the malfunctioning of card readers in many polling units in parts of the country has forced the INEC to extend the election to Sunday in areas where the card readers failed and the electoral boy had resorted to manual accreditation Vanguard reports.
Fani-Kayode who noted that the fears that PDP had all along expressed over the use of card readers for this crucial election have now been confirmed, said, “We had raised a number of issues about the card reader; for instance, we had argued that the card reader should have been test-run for a smaller election before deploying it for an election of this magnitude; we had raised other concerns, but the INEC under the Chair of Professor Attahiru Jega, had insisted on using the machine.
“Now that the machine has messed up the elections in many polling booths in parts of the country, necessitating the extension of the exercise to Sunday, it is now very clear that our party, the PDP, and the Presidential Campaign Organisation were right after all in their reservations about the use of the card readers.
“The malfunctioning of the machine is just the first instance of the imperfection and deliberate sinister designs for which INEC, acting in cahoots with the APC, wanted to deploy the machine.  The other components of the sinister designs will soon unravel to the shock of Nigerians.
“Apart from the card readers that largely malfunctioned to the extent that our presidential candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan could not have his fingerprint verified, result sheets were not provided in many places.
Fani Kayode had earlier alleged that INEC had deliberately awarded the contract for the production of the card reader machine to be used for the elections to a “fanatical” supporter of Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC.

General Buhari Asks Nigerians To Stay Awake

General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate from the All Progressives Congress (APC), addresses to Nigerians via his Facebook account.
APC presidential candidate calls on residents to stay awake and ensure that the result sheet is filled.
He said: “Ensure the result sheet is filled before you leave. Announcement is not where it ends.”
Nigerians in their reactions to the post praises the General and congratulates him with victory, while results are not known yet.
Adesola said: “This is clear to all Nigeria, they can’t do anything again, my God has finally put them to shame, if they try nonsense wt d results that means they’re looking for trouble which I believe they too will not try such because they know God is never in their support anymore, I pray God almighty will help you to deliver us from corruption which is the number one enemy of our dear country without being compromise.”
Mohammed G. Ahmed added: “Whatever it takes, we will ensure that our votes count. The masses are cooperating by providing and fueling generators at polling units.”
Though counting of ballot papers is still ongoing and 300 polling units will continue voting process on Sunday, March 29, some results have been already displayed (Abia: PDP 75%, APC 25%; Lagos: PDP 10%, APC 90%).
The results of the presidential election in polling unit 022 at the presidential villa, Abuja indicate that the General Buhari defeated President Jonathan with about 93 votes.

Thugs Snatch Ballot Box In Gombe

Thugs suspected to be working for the ruling People Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe state Saturday snatched one of the ballot boxes at Shehu Manzo 005 polling unit in Gombe metropolis where Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo’s casted his vote.
It was gathered that the thugs were aided by armed policemen men on patrol in the polling unit area after observing from the tune of the counting that the result may not favor PDP’s presidential candidate.
Before then, votes for the Senate and House of representatives were already counted and the All progressive Congress (APC) candidates won both.
Nasiru Shehu Ali Sidi Manzo, an eye witness said they noticed thugs patrolling the area and reported to policemen on patrol that thugs were disrupting the peaceful conduct of voting at the polling unit, but were ignored by the police.
“We are aware of plans to destabilize the smooth conduct of the voting at this polling unit because APC is going to win but we ignored the rumor.
“So, on sighting the thugs carrying all sorts of weapons, voters started running away but that did not deter us. Some people remain and chase them away.
“After the voting when counting started and APC was leading, suddenly the policemen tear-gassed the area and forced the electoral officials into their vehicle,” said Manzo, APC’s agent at the polling unit.
He said APC scored 303 votes, while PDP 88 and three invalid votes were recorded for the Gombe/Funakaye/Kwami constituency Federal House of Representative election.
He said APC recorded 394 votes against PDP’s 92 with 2 invalids were recorded in the Gombe North Senatorial District election.
He said the thugs assisted by the police came when counting of the votes for the presidential election started at the polling unit and snatched the box.
When contacted the police spokesman DSP Fwaje Atajiri, dismissed the allegation saying that it was the work of mischief makers who only wanted to cause trouble.
The Gombe state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barrister Kashim Gaidam said they were investigating the case and will address the press after their investigation.

Africa's Premier League dreams shattered?

In May 2000 George Weah then playing for Chelsea lifts the FA Cup after the final against Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium in London
Would George Weah have lifted the FA cup in 2000 if the new work permit rules existed then?

Africa reacted angrily when English Football Association chairman Greg Dyke announced new measures intended to boost England's national team.
This is because the rules regarding the granting of work permits to players from outside the European Union were fundamentally changing.
From 1 May, footballers from countries outside Fifa's top 50-ranked sides will find it harder to play in English football - whereas the previous rule covered countries in the top 70.
At a stroke, footballers from eight African nations sitting in the 50-70 belt - Mali, Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, South Africa, Egypt, Zambia, Rwanda and Burkina Faso - found any Premier League dreams shattered.
Former Nigeria captain Sunday Oliseh called the changes "unnecessary warfare", and legitimately asked why England can't do more to improve its coaching standards.
Meanwhile Zambia Football Association President Kalusha Bwalya said his career "would not even have started if these proposals were in place" when he was a player.

Zambian forward Kalusha Bwalya (C) hits the ball with his head during the game opposing Zambia to Mozambique in the African Nations soccer cup 17 February in Bobo Dioulasso
Kalusha Bwalya, playing here for Zambia, was named African Footballer of the Year in 1988

He labelled the system "unfair" and said talent should be rewarded no matter when you are from, citing George Weah - the only African to ever be crowned Fifa Footballer of the Year (in 1995) - as an example.
The striker, who made his name at Monaco and Milan before joining Chelsea, hails from Liberia, who are currently 117th in the world and who have never been higher than 66th.
The good news though is that the rules have been misunderstood to a certain degree and that if a player from an African nation outside Fifa's top 50 is good enough - and that is the key, being good enough - he is still likely to make it to England.

'Pathways still open'

The new proposals are planned to increase the chances for quality players to come in, and both the size of the transfer fee and wage will be factored in when considering whether to import a player who fails the new work permit rules.
In short, the higher the price, the better chance for a non-EU player to gain entry, especially if he is already proven in Europe.

Emmanuel Mayuka of Southampton scores a penalty during the pre-season friendly match between KSK Hasselt and Southampton at the Stedelijk Sportstadion on 17 July 2014 in Hasselt, Belgium
Emmanuel Mayuka may not have made it to Southampton under the new rules

The key difference is that routine players who have contributed little to the game, perhaps even having fallen through the divisions, are being targeted for exclusion, with the obvious hope that English players can make the most of the places that will have been freed up for them.
So Emmanuel Mayuka may not have made it to Southampton, for example, while a host of Africans would never have made it to the championship.
In fact, the English FA says 33% of players who earned work permits under the old system in the last five years would not have been granted a visa under the new rules.
It all means countless African footballers will try their luck elsewhere - with perhaps more finding their way to Spain's La Liga or German's thundering Bundesliga or the riches on offer in Russia.
Many pathways are still open - it is just that the quality of players from the continent arriving in the Premier League is set to be the creme de la creme - adding to the riches already provided by Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure and Michael Essien among others.
Given the pride Africans take in seeing their own light up the Premier League, this should not be too damaging - unless you are an agent of course.

Breaking News: Voting Continues On Sunday - INEC 1381119377 Election Results To Be Cancelled In Rivers State

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that he believes that today’s presidential elections held in the State were irreparably compromised, and the results must be cancelled.
According to Sahara Reporter, Amaechi, All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, alleges that interference on the party of the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has adversely influenced the result of the contest. Claiming the PDP is working with officials and security agents to rig the contest by withholding result sheets, Amaechi says the results of the election today in Rivers cannot be trusted.
“The police [are] arresting everyone that is arrestable, the police carrying ballot boxes, they are also aiding PDP supporters,” Amaechi said.
He added all the election equipment and materials, especially result sheets, are in PDP agent hands. “I couldn’t vote. In the country, we’re doing very well. In Rivers State, we discovered that all the SPOs (supervising presiding officers) have stolen all the result sheets and disappeared. So we said that there will be no election until we see the result sheets.”
Amaechi claims he was accompanied by members of the press, for purposes of documenting the developments there. “I went with cameramen. I went with Channels, AIT and NTA. They did not see anywhere that we went to that you could identify that there were result sheets.”
Expressing his disappointment with INEC’s management of the electoral process in Rivers State, Amaechi also listed the names of officials he claims are working for the PDP, and how their affiliations ultimately jeopardize the contest. “Don’t forget that the INEC commissioner here was employed by the president,” he said. “So as far as she’s concerned, she says that there was an election and that all the result sheets are in the field.”
The two-term governor stated that voters in Rivers State should be calm, and not resort to violence. His statement comes as reports of violence grow, according to conversations with representatives from the CLEEN Foundation.
At the time of this report, yet another death was reported at a ward in Ogale, Eleme local government area in Rivers State. This joins a string of violent and criminal incidences that have characterized Election Day in the state
