As speculations on a potential military coup after the country’s March 28 presidential election grow strong in the polity, the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has mobilised Nigerians against former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent comment on planned military coup in the country.
Ekiti Governor-elect, Ayo Fayose
The governor who spoke in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, tasked Nigerians to find out from Obasanjo whether he is planning a military coup or knows the people plotting to execute one, Sunnews reports.
Fayose gave the task in a reaction to the former President’s expression of fears that there could be a coup plot in the country.
The governor called on Nigerians to ask Obasanjo what formed the basis of his recent utterances.
“At his age, one would expect that the former President should stop peddling rumours, as this may cause confusion in the polity. Being a former military leader and a retired General, whatever Obasanjo says will carry weight and some people will believe that. Or is it that General Obasanjo has some ‘boys’ touting the idea of a coup? May be he is the person planning one. But whatever the case is, coup making and plotting are no longer in vogue in the world. Anybody thinking along such a line will be swimming against the tide and the consequences are there,” he said.
The governor stated that after Obasanjo said he has quit politics and publicly tore his Peoples Democratic Party membership card, peace has returned to the PDP.
He said the former President should wait till after the elections and see the manner Nigerians will celebrate the victory for the continuation of democracy after his candidate will be trounced.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo
“After the impending victory of President Jonathan, Obasanjo can leave the country or return to prison in protest. The former President should also do away with the primitive idea that anything or anybody not coming from him is not good. I advise the former President not to be part of any act that could land him in trouble. He was imprisoned during the Abacha era and a word is enough for the wise,” Fayose said.

The governor advised Obasanjo to do everything humanly possible to defend democracy, especially for the simple fact that he was a beneficiary of the current democratic dispensation in the country.
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo recently expressed fears over speculations that President Goodluck Jonathan could likely hand over power to the military come May 29, 2015.
The Ekiti state governor who is becoming famous for his high handedness and verbal attacks to opposition parties and leaders has denied ordering the police and vigilantes to arrest members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fayose, who also reacted to the statement credited to the APC spokesman,Alhaji Lai Mohammed that the PDP was planning to use what he called “modified Ekiti rigging strategy” to rig the Saturday presidential election, advised the APC to prepare for another electoral woe on Saturday.
