Diamond Bank Cleaner Steals N5.675m In Nyanya Abuja

A cleaner, Peter Oko, has narrated how he stole N5.675 million from the New Nyanya branch of Diamond Bank, where he worked.

The 29 year-old stated that he took the keys to the vault, stole the money and hid it in a carton, which he took home after the close of work.

The money was however recovered by the police, which said that the suspect had been charged to court.

Oko told Northern City News at the Nasarawa State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department in Lafia that he carried out the theft alone, saying, “As a cleaner, I knew where all the keys were kept.”

He added, “I single-handedly carried out the operation because I have been working as a cleaner in the bank for the past 10 years and my eyes had been on one of the keys to the vault, where the bank used to keep all its money.

“As a cleaner, my attention was not only on the keys, but on how I will carry out the operation successfully without being caught by either the security or any staff of the bank.”

The suspect said he stole the money without the knowledge of the bank workers, adding that he had access to all the foreign currencies in the bank as he knew where they were kept.

“As a cleaner, I knew where all the secret files were kept and where the bank kept its keys where you can have access to dollars, Nigerian currency and all other currencies.”

Oko blamed the economic situation for his action, stating that he had never been involved in a criminal act before now.

“The devil of economy recession pushed me into the crime; I have never committed a criminal act before, luck ran out on me and I was caught in the process,” he stated.

The state Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Bello, said the crime was reported to the police in October, 2016, by the bank, adding that the matter was then transferred from Karu Divisional Police Headquarters to the SCIID for investigations.

2,000 Nigerians Dying In Chinese Prisons

Three days after Chijioke Obioha, a 38-year-old Nigerian, was executed in Singapore for drug trafficking, The Guardian has received a prison note smuggled out of Dong-guan prison in China by a source, which gave graphic details of the plights of over 2,000 Nigerians languishing in the Chinese prison.

Obioha was hanged in Changi Prison early on Friday morning alongside a Malaysian national, who was convicted on separate drugs offenses.

He was arrested in April 2007 after being found in possession of more than 2.6 kilogrammes of cannabis. The quantity surpassed the 500 grammes threshold that triggers the automatic presumption of trafficking under Singaporean law.

At the weekend, a fresh deportee from China, who had a brief stint in the Dong-guan Prison and managed to hide dozens of prison notes scribbled on tissue papers in his anus, said the prison facility alone where he was held for over three months had more than 2,000 Nigerians detained for various reasons, mostly drug-related.

According to him, many Nigerians have been incapacitated owing to the daily torture meted out to them by prison officials, while a lot more are on death row waiting for the hangman.

“One of the most commonly forms of torture is the shocking treatment where inmates are given continuous shocking from an electric device for up to two hours. When going through this procedure, most of us urinate and defecate on our pants. Some people, who have spent some time there have developed brain damage or some form of mental problems,” he said.

Excerpts of the letter read: “Dear fellow citizens of Nigeria, this is the voice of your compatriots suffering in chinese prison. We have been looking for an opportunity to make our plights known to the public, but God is so kind, one of us is being released now. This is why we are using him as our contact to the outside world.

“Many of us have a very heavy sentences of death and life imprisonment. Some of us have spent over 15 years in prison. We want our home government to come to our aid. We are being treated like animals, mostly Nigerians and other Africans.

“We are tortured daily with electric device. The worst part is that it is our fellow prisoners officials use to carry out this torture. When we ask why they do this to us, they say it is because we are blacks, our government don’t care for us and our government can’t do anything to them.

“The only reason many of us have not committed suicide is the hope of being transferred some day to our home country. Some countries such as Ethopia, Senegal, Iran, Jordan, Colombia and Yemen have started taking their citizens back home and we believe the Nigerian embassy is fully aware of our plights but has refused to take any action.

“We are made to work long hours in factory every day without any salary being paid to us. Yet, we are not well-fed. The only thing left for them to do is to exterminate us or put us in the gas chamber just as the Nazis did to the Jewish people.”

An online report on Dong-guan’s prison system in 2013 claimed that of the 5,000 inmates in the jail on Xinzhou Island in Dong-guan’s Shijie Village, there are about 1,500 foreign nationals from 53 countries. Most of them are there for drug-related crimes.

Also, according to another news report on the Dong-guan prison, electrocution, beatings and suicide are part of everyday life.

Danny Cancian, a New Zealand national, was released from the jail last year, and was quoted in an article as saying for the four years he spent locked up in Dong-guan, a stint during which he didn’t see the sun or the stars, “there were people hanging themselves every week. They had to take all the wire clothe lines out of the cells,” he said.

Based on his account, six days of every week, prisoners would be marched at 5:00a.m. to a factory next door to the prison — after a breakfast of rice water — where they would work until 8:00p.m..

Why Buhari Is Determined That APC Wins Ondo Guber Poll

The outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State is a major test run for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election bid in 2019, presidency sources have said.

According to THISDAY checks, the Buhari camp of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to win Ondo State, first to make a statement in terms of who is in charge of the party, and two, to set the path for the 2019 general election.

Sources in the presidency hinted that with the decision to edge out certain players in the APC over the Ondo governorship poll, and the decimation of the most formidable opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in the race, the camp of the president is out to test its popularity as well as capacity for political strategy in the lead up to the 2019 elections.

A source hinted that though the president is very keen on a second term in office, he is taking it slowly because of the state of the country, but would not mind taking his chances if the atmosphere is right.

It is for this reason the presidency is said to have gone out on a limb over the Ondo governorship poll slated to hold this weekend. The source noted that if, with all that has been at play in the Ondo theatrics APC wins, then Buhari would throw his hat into the ring come 2019.

However, if the outcome of the election does not go as planned, it may not necessarily mean that the president would automatically abandon his re-election bid, but he might only take a more cautious approach to his second term bid for the presidency, especially if the mood of the public remains the same.

Although the source did not address the allegation of interference by the presidency in all that has gone on in the state, especially within the PDP, it is generally believed that the presidency actually had a hand in the crisis in the main opposition party, particularly the bid to stop the candidate of Governor Olusegun Mimiko, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN).

Another source told THISDAY that the general consensus is that if the outgoing governor is able to get Jegede on the ballot, then the dream of the president to realise a Rotimi Akeredolu governorship might be in jeopardy, hence the alleged attempt to frustrate Jegede’s candidacy through the courts.

It is against this backdrop that the president’s foot soldiers are said to have resolved to not only frustrate the emergence of Jegede, but ensure that Akeredolu emerges the next governor of Ondo State.

Another reason the Ondo saga is believed to have become really messy is the alleged decision by a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to extract his own pound of flesh from Mimiko, who was believed to have worked against him in 2014 when he sought re-election but was defeated by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Sources informed THISDAY that Fayemi is taking the Ondo election personally because of Mimiko, and is the very reason the Minister of Solid Minerals Development has not hidden his desire to oust the PDP and Mimiko’s candidate at all cost.

He was even said to have been responsible for some of the problems the Alliance for Democracy (AD) candidate, Olusola Oke, had at the time he (Oke) defected to the AD.

All he wants, sources said, is to clear the road for Akeredolu and would stop at nothing including decimating whoever stands in APC’s way.

Another presidency source also volunteered that the angst of the National Leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over the party’s primary in the state, which threw up Akeredolu was self-inflicted.

He said Tinubu had no reason to hold a grudge against the party or Buhari over the primary because the National Chairman of the party Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, at the outset, gave Tinubu his due as the national leader of the APC and its leader in the South-west geopolitical zone by consulting with him and sharing with him the delegates’ list.

“However, Tinubu’s camp tried to hedge its bet by backing three candidates for the primary. Rauf Aregbesola was backing Olusola Oke, Tinubu’s wife, Remi, was pushing for Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice, while Tinubu was supporting Dr. Olusegun Abraham.

“So Akeredolu who was not given much of a chance came and decimated the field of Tinubu’s contestants in a very close race to win the primary. If you recall, he only beat Abraham who was second by 31 votes while Abraham beat Oke who came third in the primary by 97 votes.

“The reason it was so close was because Tinubu’s camp was hedging its bet and did not want to put all of its eggs in one basket, so it could not make up its mind by backing one candidate against Akeredolu.

“As such, the votes that could have gone to Abraham was split among other candidates that they were backing,” the presidency source explained.

He also revealed that once Akeredolu emerged the party’s candidate in the Ondo poll, the APC, its governors and presidency were in no mood to change the outcome of the primary despite the recommendation of the review panel that it should hold another primary, citing other instances such as the Katsina and Adamawa primaries in 2014.

“If Buhari could accept the outcome of the Katsina primary in which his preferred candidate, Hadi Sirika lost to Aminu Masari, and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar accepted his candidate’s loss to Jibrilla Bindow, we would have expected Tinubu to do likewise by embracing Akeredolu as the APC candidate in Ondo.

“However, he has refused to do so, forgetting that the loss of his candidate to Akeredolu was self-inflicted,” he said.

Meanwhile, APC has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to postpone this weekend’s governorship election in Ondo State on account of the internal crisis in the PDP.

APC said that it opposes the call made by PDP on the electoral body to shift the election date to allow it settle its internal crisis.

A statement yesterday by its National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, said that the crisis in the PDP was self-inflicted and as such the party could not hold Ondo State and the country hostage on account of its internal problem.

“The attention of the APC has been drawn to a bizarre request by a faction of the PDP on INEC to postpone the November 26 governorship election in Ondo State on account of the PDP’s internal crisis.

“APC calls on INEC to ignore PDP’s bizarre request and concentrate on delivering a free, fair, credible and transparent ballot on election day.

“The PDP in continuation of its wild conspiracies on the Ondo governorship election has also accused the APC of colluding with the judicial system, INEC and security agencies to ‘manipulate’ the outcome of the Ondo State governorship election.

“The PDP crisis and the aftermath governorship candidate tussle within its ranks are self-inflicted and the PDP cannot hold Ondo State and indeed the country hostage on account of its internal crisis.

“Instead of making the ridiculous election postponement request on INEC, the PDP should focus and redirect its energy towards putting its house in order.

“The APC is not party to any scheme to subvert justice and undermine the very progressive and participatory democracy which the APC fiercely stands for.

“The Ondo electorate is wise and will vote for the candidate with a proven track record of performance on election day,” it said.

2019: Nine Governors To Leave APC

Ahead of the 2019 presidential elections, there are indications that some state governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are planning to ditch the ruling party.

The rumoured exit, according to a party leader, will affect the fortunes of the governing party and President Muhammadu Buhari’s future ambition in 2019.

Except the president and party leaders move fast to heal the wounds in APC, no fewer than nine governors and hundreds of party chieftains are on their way out of the party.

The APC is expected to suffer more in South-West and North Central. Although the APC, the ruling party at the centre, currently controls 23 out of the 36 states of the federation, a number of governors in these states have become disenchanted with the party and the government at the centre.

Another source told our correspondent that some of the governors are reaching out to their colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for alliance in forming a new political platform.

New Telegraph learnt that the cracks which developed in the APC soon after the party’s historic electoral victory last year, have continued to widen by the day due to the perceived policy of exclusion unleashed on its members from the top hierarchy of the party.

The negative policy has manifested mostly in the alleged lopsided appointments made by President Buhari since he assumed office 16 months ago.

The governors are also uncomfortable with the non-fulfillment of many populist campaign promises upon which the party rode to power. However, National Secretary of the APC, Hon. Mai Mala Buni has dismissed the reports of the impending defection of some governors as untrue.

According to Buni, President Buhari and the governors “are on the same page of providing democracy dividends to the electorate.” A member of the ruling party, who spoke with New Telegraph in confidence, said the governors had been bearing the pains of dashes hopes and exclusion from major decisions of government for a long while, but were forced to voice it out after Buhari released his list of ambassadorial nominees and they found that they were completely sidelined from the process.

“You recall that recently, the governors wrote him (Buhari) a letter and sent a delegation to deliver the message to him. They just couldn’t believe that those appointed as ambassadorial nominees from their states were not known to them, the governors. I must tell you that that letter is a warning shot and a signal of what we should expect as we go into 2017.

Most of these governors are fed up with this style of leader ship where everything is done by the so-called cabal in Aso Rock without consultation with other stakeholders.

“You know that since 1999, the governors have been major stakeholders in our democracy. Some people may not like them, but they deserve some respect because they are the political leaders in their various states.

They do not just have control over the machinery of government in their states, they have their loyalists at the two chambers of the National Assembly and a President can only ignore them at his own peril,” he said.

New Telegraph learnt that apart from the frosty relationship between the Presidency and the leadership of the National Assembly dating back to the inauguration of the 8th Assembly, some of the governors have been making inroads into the parliament, using their influence to checkmate the Presidency.

There have been speculations that some of the governors were the brains behind the stalling of a number of proposals sent by the executive to the legislature.

It was learnt that a number of governors, particularly those from the South- West geo-political zone are already on their way out of the APC because of the perceived humiliation of the national leader of the party and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, by the party and the presidency.

Sources within the party disclosed that given what has happened in the Ondo State primary elections, the mass defection of APC governors and members to different political party will only be a matter of time.

“I am sure you are not expecting these governors who rode to power on the Tinubu political machinery to still stick out their necks for a man who has maltreated their principal. They won’t because right now, they are aggrieved that those of them who came into the APC from the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) have been sidelined along with their leader. “Why do you think some people staged the pro-Tinubu rally recently?
These are clear signals that the party is heading for a major implosion where everyone will take their destiny in their own hands,” the source said. 

Similarly, their counterparts in the North Central who also feel shortchanged by the APC, a party they massively supported in 2015, have kick started a process of re-alignment with other political interest groups.

New Telegraph gathered that some political heavyweights in the North Central are toying with the option of aligning with their associates in the North-East geo- political zone to form a formidable political block ahead of 2019.

A source, who is conversant with the plans, disclosed that currently, the alliance is being coordinated on the platform of a socio-cultural organisation, pending when the time comes to unveil the real agenda.

Another clique within the North Central is said to be warming up to join forces with some elements who have become politically displaced by the crisis in the PDP and some aggrieved elements from the APC to float a new political party that could challenge the APC.

Meanwhile, a former Chairman of the APC in Kaduna State, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said President Buhari must intervene to fix the crisis in the party and save it from disintegration.

Baba-Ahmed, a retired federal permanent secretary, acknowledged that some members of the APC were joining forces with others to form a new political platform.

According to him, the problems affecting the party have been left to linger for too long and must be settled in the next few months, if the party hopes to retain power in 2019.

“Even if you can forgive some of the crisis and blame it on inexperience, you cannot forgive the fact that we have tolerated this crisis for too long. “They have persisted, and that is not something we should excuse, we should not also excuse the existence of massive problems in states and at the national level. “Those who have the responsibility of fixing the APC as a political platform are not fixing it.

It is what we are seeing now; a large number of powerful people within APC are walking away from it, thinking that it is beyond redemption. That is unfortunate and I think it is a major setback for the party.”

Nigeria's former minister kidnapped in Kaduna

• Gunmen have reportedly abducted Nigeria’s former minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse in Kaduna state. Daily Trust reports that Hirse was abducted “right in front of the residence of President Muhammadu Buhari’s powerful nephew, Alhaji Mamman Daura, on Inuwa Wada road in Kaduna.”

• It was learnt that the former minister, with his friends, had gone on a condolence visit to the family of the late Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki on kabiru road. This is a few meters from Inuwa Wada road. He then decided to make a quick stopover at the house of Daura who was reportedly at home and was receiving guests and other family members.
• The report quoted a witness as saying that Hirse alighted from his car with a friend he simply identified as Talba and was exchanging pleasantries with some guests who were standing in front of Daura’s house when an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla drove into the street at top speed and stopped in front of the former minister and his friends.
• The witness said the three young men, armed and masked, jumped down from the car and accosted the former minister almost immediately. The witness said: “From what I could hear, they were asking him to get into their car but he was trying to seek further explanations from them but at that time, people started approaching the scene so one of them raised the gun he was holding and made to shoot but it did not fire, he tried it the second time and it failed, but the third time, a shot rang and people ran for dear lives.”
• At the time of this report, the whereabouts of the victim was yet to be ascertained and the police was yet to react. Kaduna has gradually become a hub for kidnappers in Nigeria. In October, Laurentia Laraba Mallam, the minister of the environment during the government of Goodluck Jonathan, was abducted along with her 73-year- old husband, Pius in Jere, in Kaduna state. She was released about 24 hours after the incident.

Prices of commodities crash amid recession worries

• – As prices of basic staple food items in major markets in Lagos continue to rise, the plight of most Nigerians following the general increase, has been described by many as unfortunate – A survey conducted by NAIJ.com at Ogba Retail market, Lagos, reveals the continuous rise of some basic items and a stable price of others – Traders across various markets continue to lament low patronage while buyers on the other hand complain of the hike in price of basic commodities and worsening economic situation As the prices of basic staple food items in major markets in Lagos continue to rise, the plight of most Nigerians following the general increase in the price of goods and services has been described by most traders as unfortunate. Findings across the country have shown that the prices of virtually all commodities have skyrocketed, leading to financial pressure on most families. A survey conducted by NAIJ.com at Ogba Retail market, Lagos, shows the continuous rise of some basic items and a stable price of others. Checks revealed that the prices of staple foods like rice, vegetable oil, meat, vegetables and soup ingredients have increased significantly. Speaking with our correspondent, a trader at the market, Vincent, said the price Egusi, Ogbono, crayfish and other commodities have increased. “Things are difficult and expensive. The amount we used to buy the commodities before is not the amount we buy now; even the quality and content have reduced. The amount of purchase is higher than before. 
•  “Before, I buy and sell bag of egusi, ogbono and even crayfish but now, it is not so. It is very expensive. We cannot afford it. The price has not changed. The money we were using to buy a bag of egusi before is what we use to buy one olodo of egusi while ogbono is a no-go area. Everything in the market now is costly. “For crayfish, it is seasonal. It is also expensive and a paint is N3,000. A 25-litre keg of palm oil is N17,500 while groundnut oil costs N16,000, this depends on the quality, the brand and the purchasing price. “People tend to buy according to their pockets, cutting their coats according to their size. The present administration has the right answer to the economic situation. “The fuel price increment has led to the increase in the price of the commodities. The market is not moving and even people you see selling goods only sell to clear off the old items so as to go get a new one. We are just trying to survive,” the man lamented. Similarly, it was gathered that the price of fish has increased. While some blamed it on import duties, market price and the demand, others blame it on the current economic situation. Madam Ify, a trader in the market who sells fish, turkey, chicken and other food items, attributed this to the current economic situation, import duties, market forces and cost of purchase. She said: “Like before, I sell three cartons of fish daily but now I sell a carton of fish for a whole week only if there is electricity to ice in otherwise, it will get spoilt before then. “That is the situation we have found ourselves in. Things are expensive and people are complaining and looking for money. You cannot cook a nutritious soup with a N1000 lately.

• “A 20kg carton of Titus fish now costs N19,000 but before, it cost N9,800. A carton of croaker was N12,000 before, but now we buy at N22,000. A carton of kote fish cost N7,000 before but now it is N15,000. A 30kg of kote is N24,000 now but before it costs N15,000. A carton of chicken before was between N5,000 and N6,000 but now, it costs N8,500 or N9,500 depending on the seller and the purchase price. A carton of turkey costs between N7,000-N8,500 but now it costs N10,500. “Market is not moving like before. We do not even have the slightest idea of how we got to this point. When we go to buy these items, we get to pay a particular amount on each bags of item purchased, pay the touts at the market as well, all these have brought about the increase of the price of the items. Aside the commodities imported, the local produce are more expensive than the imported ones.” A rice retailer, who identified herald as Mrs Jane, said that the price depends on the brand, the quality, the market and the type. She added that the commodity has increased due to the restriction placed on the importation of rice, the cost of transportation and other expenses charged. “The price of rice continues to rise and sometimes the amount purchased determines the amount it will be sold. Same goes for beans and garri. The restriction placed on the importation of rice led to its increase and often times, the ones that are produced here also is expensive,” she began. “Market is moving slowly compared to previous months. People only buy things because they must eat hence they die of starvation. But I must confess that the purchasing power of the buyers has been affected greatly which therefore leads to low patronage on our part. “A bag of aroso rice before as at last week cost N18,000 but now it cost N19,000. We cannot tell if it will rise higher in coming weeks. While that of agric rice cost N17,000 before but now N18,000. For beans, a small bag of Olo one beans cost N8,500 before but now it is N14,000. While a medium bag of white garri cost N9,000 before but now N15,000. I buy my items at Agege, but the price I sell them is determined on the amount of purchase,” Madam Jane added. Also, a wholesaler who pleaded anonymity, informed that the wholesale price of the food items has been relatively stable, but informed that retailers deliberately increased it so as to make extra profits. Mr Jimoh, a meat seller at the market, said the price of meat has also risen, as he blamed the current economic struggle, cost of purchase and market prices for the issues. He said: “the price of meat continues to rise because everything in the market has risen. Big cows which was sold then from N70,000, now sells from N100,000 and above while the smaller ones can be purchased from N60,000 depending on the situation of the market and location of purchase.” In addition, the price of perishable goods like tomatoes, pepper and onion has been stable as observed. A basket of Hausa tomatoes which cost N15,000 a few weeks back, now costs N12,000 and even less as revealed by the traders in the market. Also, a bag of pepper ranges from N7,000 – N10,000 depending on the type and the quality (how fresh and size of the basket). While the price of onion remains the same. Traders are of the opinion that the price fluctuates and is not fixed compared to other products. Meanwhile the prices of provisional items such as grains, beverages, perishables and wines have gone up as observed in the market.

How frequent is it when you notice that your anger and emotions are getting out of control that's driving you to commit all sorts of inappropriate, reckless, crazy behaviors?

As for me, the single root cause that lights my fuse the most is "people getting angry and reacting with anger for no justifiable cause." i have identified mine and i am already working tirelessly towards accommodating it. lets hear yours
